The Director of Billing plays a vital role in advancing a key component of the firm's revenue cycle management with responsibility for the daily management of firmwide billing activities, related staff and projects, hiring, training, performance evaluations and other staff development, problem solving and the implementation of related changes necessary for the on-going growth of the Firm. This position is directly responsible for optimizing the quality and timeliness of billing in order to accelerate the revenue cycle. The Director of Billing will also assist the Treasurer in providing WIP inventory support, analysis and reports to firm management. A hybrid work arrangement is available for this position.

Reporting Relationships:

This position reports to the Treasurer.

Essential Job Responsibilities:
  • Oversees day-to-day operations of billing function; supervises multi-office Billing Coordinator staff and Billing Operations Analyst in the performance of their tasks; manages team to peak performance, including maintaining and defining team metrics; and passionately pursues accurate reporting of WIP and the minimization of aged inventory
  • Collaborates with other departments on, and shares responsibility for, the accurate onboarding and coding of new matters
  • Assists in the annual installation of new timekeeper rates, responsible for rate setups for new timekeepers, and oversees day to day management of special timekeeper rates.
  • A leading authority on the Time Accounting and Billing policies and contributes to ensuring compliance with same
  • System administration of time and billing system (Aderant), and other programs supporting the billing function
  • Oversees set up of e-billing systems
  • Contributes to smooth month-end closings in concert with other functional areas within Finance.
  • Participates in firm-wide initiatives to streamline and standardize workflow and processes; evaluates workflow processes and procedures on an ongoing basis; recommends continuous improvements to ensure achievement of quality control standards and adherence to risk management protocols
  • Develops team goals and monitors progress towards achievement
  • Performs all functions of a Billing Coordinator on an as needed basis
  • Participates in regular meetings with Firm leadership as required.
  • Performs other duties as assigned by the managing partners, CFO, or Treasurer.

In accordance with applicable Federal and State laws, the anticipated annual salary range for this position, depending on location, is as follows:

  • Rochester, NY: $88,195 to $130,995

In addition to a standard benefits package, this role may be eligible for additional contingent compensation based on an array of factors, including but not limited to: work performance, geographic location, work experience, education, and qualifications. Because such contingent compensation is not yet calculable or may be zero ($0) in some circumstances, the above-listed salary range(s) are Nixon Peabody's good faith estimate of the annual salary(ies) it reasonably expects to pay for the position at the time of this posting.
