Position Summary

Required to coordinate, supervise and manage all activities in the three chemistry department service centers. These serve 15 undergraduate lab courses and research projects. Responsible for supervising student assistants and maintaining a safe work environment. Responsible for maintaining the chemistry department budget, locating and procuring chemical and laboratory supplies. Responsible for working with vendors to identify best sources of chemical and laboratory supplies. Responsible for maintaining the chemistry department chemical inventory and safety training records. Responsible for coordinating preparation for chemistry department safety inspections. Ability to work with the chemistry department office staff and equipment technician on departmental needs. Position hours are 8 hours per day, variable between 7 am and 9 pm depending upon department scheduling to meet class needs but generally from 8 am to 5 pm. Position requires someone who can work as a member of a team, and can be diplomatic in high pressure situations. May be required to wear a respirator.

FLSA: Non-Exempt (Eligible for overtime compensation)

Anticipated Hiring Range: $4,812 per month - $5,695 per month, commensurate with education, experience, skills, and training

Department Information

The Department of Chemistry at Sacramento State offers an American Chemical Society approved BS Chemistry degree, a BS Biochemistry degree, BA degrees with concentrations in biochemistry and forensics, and master's degrees in chemistry, including a biochemistry concentration. The department is undergoing rapid growth and currently has over 400 majors. Our degree programs include a strong focus on instrumentation and hands-on experiences. We place a high value on faculty mentored research for undergraduates and graduate students. Our graduates obtain industry and government jobs in chemistry, biochemistry, and biotechnology; complete MS/PhD programs in all areas of chemistry; complete professional health degrees in medicine, pharmacy, dentistry, and optometry; and teach in high schools/community colleges in the Sacramento region.

Minimum Qualifications

Knowledge of the principles and methods related to performing support services for lower and upper division chemistry courses; knowledge of the principles, information, methods and techniques related to chemistry laboratory courses; knowledge of the materials and supplies in chemistry laboratory courses and their uses.

Ability to plan, organize and schedule activities; ability to operate technical and scientific equipment used in chemistry laboratories; ability to maintain records; ability to coordinate support service to meet a variety of needs; ability to adjust and perform simple maintenance of technical and scientific equipment. Ability to supervise technical chemistry work. Ability to procure scientific materials, maintain inventory and budget.

Experience:

Equivalent to four years of experience providing instructional support services for a related unit or discipline, or in producing materials or supplies or repairing equipment in a discipline related to the area to which assigned.

or

Equivalent to two years of college with 16 semester units in chemistry courses involving extensive use of materials, supplies, or equipment and in a discipline related to the area may be substituted for one year of the required experience.

or

Equivalent to four years of college with 16 semester units in chemistry courses involving extensive use of materials, supplies, or equipment and in a discipline related to the area may be substituted for two years of the required experience.

Required Qualifications
  1. Knowledge of the principles of performing support services for lower and upper division chemistry courses.
  2. Knowledge of the principles, methods, and techniques related to chemistry laboratory courses.
  3. Knowledge of the materials and supplies in chemistry laboratory courses and their uses.
  4. Knowledge of laboratory safety, chemical hazards, incompatibilities, chemical storage and handling requirements, chemical waste collection and disposal.
  5. Knowledge about safe handling of gases, coolants and cryogens.
  6. Ability to use equipment related to chemistry labs.
  7. Ability to maintain records and inventory control and budget materials.
  8. Ability to adjust and perform simple maintenance of technical and scientific equipment.
  9. Ability to adhere to and help enforce department and university safety standards.
  10. Ability to make appropriate work decisions by following or interpreting established policies and procedures and past precedents; ability to identify and solve standard problems, and refer more complex problems to appropriate staff.
  11. Ability to work independently; possess self-direction skills to be able to proactively organize work; set priorities; anticipate setbacks; and follow through on the position responsibilities.
  12. Ability to and experience in supervising others; be able to direct others to be able to support chemistry laboratory courses; be able to coordinate work schedules.
  13. Ability to locate sources of chemical and laboratory materials.
  14. Team oriented; ability to work in a team-oriented environment and cooperative as a member of the department and organization toward the achievement of its mission and goals.
  15. Possess good communication and interpersonal skills to interact and communicate effectively with all levels of staff and external constituencies, both verbally and in writing.
  16. Ability to use a variety of current computer software programs including but not limited to Google, Outlook, Word and Excel.
  17. Ability to lift occasionally move, lift, carry, or position supplies, equipment and or materials up to 50 lbs
  18. Ability to work various hours as needed.

Preferred Qualifications
  1. Bachelor degree in chemistry or related field preferred with at least 24 semester or 36 quarter units in chemistry.
  2. Four years of experience providing instructional support services in chemistry courses.
  3. Experience maintaining budgets and preparing budget reports in a scientific environment.
  4. Ability to procure difficult to locate scientific materials.
  5. Experience in supervising others in a support-oriented laboratory.
