The Director of Government Affairs will be a key role within TPT, leading the development and implementation of TPT's government affairs strategy, with responsibility for representing our interests before federal, state and local governments, trade associations, national and state political organizations, regulators, and other key partners to advance TPT's mission. This position will be a member of TPT's Legal Department reporting directly to the General Counsel and Chief Compliance Officer and will work extensively with leadership across the organization to develop and advance our policy agenda.

Salary: $105,000 - $120,000 annually (depending on qualifications)

Hybrid Work Environment: Candidates must live in or be willing to relocate to the Twin Cities Metro area.

Major Areas of Responsibility:

  • Partnering with TPT's senior leadership and key partners within the organization to identify, hone, and execute strategic priorities.
  • Representing the organization before, interacting with, and lobbying federal, state, and local governments and regulators.
  • Establishing and maintaining meaningful relationships with public officials and regulators at the federal, state, and local levels.
  • Advising on potential reputational implications and risk mitigation of TPT's policy positions.
  • Organizing and facilitating advocacy events for TPT, including its senior leadership and Board of Trustees.
  • Participating in relevant trade associations and effectively representing the organization's positions.
  • Drafting testimony, comments, replies, and other materials as necessary to advance the organization's government affairs strategic priorities.
  • Monitoring and reporting on legislative and regulatory activity, identifying and escalating relevant issues to the organization's leadership.
  • Managing consultants, lobbyists, related personnel, and administrative matters.

Position Requirements:

  • Minimum 4 years of combined experience working as a legislative aide at the federal or state level, state employee in a government department or agency, contract lobbyist, corporate lobbyist, or an association lobbyist in a private, public, or government environment.
  • Expertise in the legislative process and ability to analyze and react to political trends at all levels of government.
  • Skilled at quickly and effectively creating a position on an issue while taking into account diverse perspectives and competing interests.
  • Excellent communication skills and attention to detail.
  • Excellent organization, prioritization, and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal direct supervision.
  • Ability to lead multi-disciplinary projects and navigate complex relationships.
  • Sharp business acumen, sound judgment, and strategic deal-making ability.
  • Basic understanding of the legal and political issues that arise at a public media organization is a plus.
