Position Summary Information

Primary Purpose
The Business Intelligence Engineer (BIE) serves as a steward of the Institutional Research Information System (IRIS) database, overseeing its management, optimization, and integrity. This role is pivotal in ensuring the reliability, security, and performance of IRIS while actively contributing to the development of business intelligence reporting and analytical tools. This position reports directly to the Associate Provost for Strategic Decision Making.
Essential Functions
  • Manage and maintain the IRIS database to ensure data accuracy, integrity, and security.. Oversee data cleansing, normalization, and validation processes to enhance data quality.
  • Design, develop, and maintain data pipelines for efficient extraction, transformation, and loading (ETL) processes.
  • Integrate data from disparate sources into the IRIS database, ensuring data consistency and integrity.
  • Implement automation and scheduling mechanisms for routine data processing tasks.
  • Design and implement database schema modifications and indexing strategies for performance improvement.
  • Monitor database performance, troubleshoot issues, and identify opportunities for optimization and enhancement to improve system performance and usability.
  • Partner with university stakeholders working to develop data governance policies and procedures to uphold data standards and compliance requirements.
  • Collaborate with stakeholders to understand reporting and analytical requirements and to ensure alignment with evolving business needs.
  • Develop and maintain business intelligence reports, dashboards, and analytical tools using tools such as Tableau, Power BI, or similar platforms.
  • Translate complex data sets into actionable insights and visualizations to support decision-making processes.
  • Conduct regular analysis of data trends, patterns, and anomalies to uncover insights and opportunities for improvement.
  • Stay updated on emerging technologies and best practices in database management and business intelligence to drive continuous improvement.
  • Collaborate with IT teams to ensure compatibility and scalability of data infrastructure.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications
  • High School Diploma.
  • One (1) year of experience overseeing large-scale databases and organizing underlying data with ETL processes to support reporting for an organization.
  • One (1) year of experience with a programming language such as Microsoft SQL, PL/SQL, SQL PLUS, or similar structured query language.
  • One (1) year of experience in analyzing data and creating data visualizations to obtain actionable or practical insights.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Two (2) years of experience as a database administrator in a institutional research office or with data reporting in a higher education environment.
  • Foundational understanding of relational databases.
  • Advanced skills in a programming language such as Microsoft SQL, PL/SQL, SQL PLUS, or similar structured query language.
  • Experience using data visualization tools that may include but not limited to Power BI, Python, R, Tableau, Excel, PowerPoint.
  • In-depth knowledge of database management systems, including installation, configuration, maintenance, and performance optimization.
  • Strong command of SQL and database query optimization techniques.
  • Solid understanding of database security concepts and best practices.
  • Experience in designing and implementing data backup and recovery strategies for databases. Experience documenting processes and implementing system controls.
  • Demonstrated ability to think critically and analytically.
  • Meticulous attention to detail. Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Technical proficiency with data testing and data management.
  • Ability to work independently. Encompass traits of good judgment, confidentiality, and discretion in communicating with colleagues and constituents.
  • Positive attitude, proven ability to work successfully with diverse populations and demonstrated commitment to promote and enhance diversity and inclusion.
  • Experience and sensitivity in working with people of diverse backgrounds and cultures.

Work Environment/Work Week/Travel:
Work performed during standard business hours.
Hiring Range $36.05 to $38.46 per hour We consider factors such as, but not limited to, scope and responsibilities of the position, candidate's qualifications, internal equity, as well as market and organizational considerations when extending an offer.
