Job Description:
Global Gopher Leader for Summer 2024, with Sponsored Student focus:
Global Gopher Experiences is seeking international students who are willing to share their stories and experiences as international students when welcoming new students, in particular during Global Gopher Events sessions. These student leaders will be part of the Global Gopher Leadership team, with a focus/specialization in sponsored student experiences. The student's main supervisor will be the Associate Director for Sponsored Students, but will also be working with the Director for Student Engagement in ISSS, Assistant Director for Exchange Programs, Director and Assistant Director for Recruitment and with the Director of Advising.

Pay rate: $15.00/hr


1. Global Gopher Leadership duties:

Providing advice and insights during Global Gopher Experiences (GGE)sessions (including hosting live/zoom event and meetings/tech runs.

Leaders will be involved in the following:
-Providing advice to new undergraduate and graduate international students in the virtual panel section
-You will be asked to write your script for accessibility purposes
-The live sessions are recorded
-Hosting Breakout room for international students, with a focus on sponsored students
-Provide insights during GGE planning sessions about areas for sponsored students
-Attend tech runs and brainstorming sessions
-Participate in the welcome pre-recorded video for new students
-Complete required onboarding training
-Answer emails and refer them to the appropriate resources
-Maintain and create new student content for emails and social media in partnership with the
-Global Gopher Influencers
-Represent the international student needs in advisory or committee boards.
-Attend, organize and lead in person and virtual events
-Coordinate group events and cultural activities and make necessary arrangements for all logistical needs (possibly including transportation needs)
-Attending cultural activities in the afternoons, evenings, and weekends
-Assigned tasks as needed

2. Sponsored Student Assistant duties:

Administrative Support: Provide support to professional staff in the sponsored, exchange and recruitment areas.

-Answer emails and refer them to the appropriate resources
-Maintain and create content for emails and social media in partnership with the Global Gopher Influencers
-Complete data entry in MailChimp, Salesforce, DestinyOne, Google Suite, and Sunapsis. Use of APlus for student support may be needed. Training will be provided
-Pack and mail recruitment materials for recruitment trips along with travel research, itinerary organization and trip follow up
-Help with ISSS events - international graduation, scholarship reception, New International Student Sessions, etc.
-Coordinate group events and cultural activities and make necessary arrangements for all logistical needs (possibly including transportation needs)
-Attending cultural activities in the afternoons, evenings, and weekends
-Assist other ISSS staff as assigned
-Supervised by Associate Director of Sponsored Students

Qualifications

Eligibility requirements:
-Student must be an international student or recent graduate and a sponsored student or recent sponsored student
-Knowledge, understanding, and willingness to learn and educate about important current issues as an international student
-Knowledge, understanding, and willingness to learn about college student development and university culture.
-Good written and oral communication skills.
-Professionalism (as defined by our office), timeliness, responsibility and reliability.
-Enthusiasm and creativity.
-Organizational talent, including attention to detail & multiple deadlines.
-Able to work independently and under supervision.
-Willingness to learn, ask for assistance, and work with groups of people
-Must be able to work on campus as an F1 or J1 international student
-Solid grasp of Google Suite and Zoom

About the Department

(ISSS) is dedicated to serving the University of Minnesota's international community. ISSS supports the University's internationalization efforts by helping departments bring new foreign nationals into the community; by providing intercultural training for students, staff, and faculty; and by offering events that build links between the U.S. and international communities on campus. In addition, ISSS offers training and programs that enhance the awareness and understanding of cross-cultural and international issues across campus and consults with University faculty and staff on issues related to international students and scholars in their departments.
