About the Job

Job Description:

The Program Adviser manages education abroad programs and advises students on education abroad opportunities, along with working with faculty and staff on campus, and on-site staff around the world. Learning Abroad Center (LAC) Program Advisers take a lead role in implementing and managing education abroad programs, recruiting and advising students, and working with staff and faculty on curriculum integration. The Program Advisers will be resilient and possess a strong work ethic, capacity to take initiative, and commitment to equity, diversity and inclusion.

Expected salary: $48,000-$50,000

Education Abroad Program Development and Administration (40%)
-Master understanding of education abroad policies, best practices, and requirements and effectively utilize intercultural communication skills to implement these with LAC overseas resident staff, UofM faculty and staff, students, and parents
-Collaborate with others in developing efficient application, acceptance and pre-departure processes
-Assist in planning education abroad programs, curriculum, policies and procedures, and program budgets/contracts
-Troubleshoot program-related issues, determine appropriate solutions, and work through to resolution
-Be knowledgeable about the U of M majors that utilize programs and potential areas of curricular growth
-Assist program director on curriculum development and course approval process with academic units
-Work with overseas resident staff to accommodate student needs regarding academics, housing/meals, student support and travel
-Assist with the development of program emergency and crisis management plans
-Serve as program specific contact for travel arrangements with travel agency, as appropriate
-Manage student evaluation process and monitor revisions of evaluation materials
-Hire, train, and supervise student staff, if needed


Student Services and Advising (40%)
-Utilize student development theory to guide diverse groups of students through program selection, application, pre-departure, and re-entry processes
-Advise a diverse group of students on general education abroad opportunities through program selection advising shifts
-Manage advising and application resources and serve as program adviser for a set portfolio of programs
-Create, process, and maintain student and program records in Slate
-Monitor submission of required application and confirmation materials
-Communicate with students via email and phone to ensure timely submission of application materials and completion of pre-departure requirements
-Respond to inquiries in accordance with FERPA guidelines
-Manage application, review, and acceptance process (including review of health forms, accommodation requests, and disciplinary infractions)
-Coordinate onsite registration verification and grade reporting
-Collaborate with collegiate liaisons
-Manage overseas student emergencies for portfolio of programs, including communication dissemination with LAC staff, students, onsite staff, and parents

Program specific promotion and recruitment (15%)
-Collaborate with communications team to plan, develop, and implement program-related promotion and recruitment efforts that appeal to students from diverse communities and cultures
-Develop and update web and use technology in program marketing
-Develop and update print materials
-Participate in promotional events
-Manage faculty and staff program site visits

Professional Development and Service (5%)
-Participate in other projects/tasks individually or as part of a team effort
-Serve on university committees related to learning abroad and participate in LAC and Global Programs and Strategy Alliance staff meetings and activities, as appropriate or assigned
-Promote, support, and participate in learning abroad and international education efforts with university units, appropriate professional associations, and organizations

Qualifications

Required Qualifications
-Bachelor's degree plus at least four years of administrative experience in higher education or relevant non-profit organization, or master's degree plus at least two years of relevant experience.
-Program planning, management, and organizational skills
-Demonstrated intercultural, oral, and written communication skills
-Demonstrated commitment to equity, diversity, and access in education abroad
-International experience, such as living/studying/working/interning/volunteering/host family stay in another cultural context, as well as the ability to articulate the importance of the experience
-Knowledge of theory and practice in areas such as student development, identity development, equity and diversity, adjustment, experiential learning, curriculum design, and intercultural communication
-Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and prioritize conflicting competing demands
-Ability to work well with diverse group of faculty, staff, students, and administrators

Preferred Qualifications
-One year in an education abroad office (with responsibilities in programming, advising, and/or administration)
-One or more second language competencies, particular emphasis on French and/or Spanish
-Experience administering learning abroad programs
-Experience working with admissions databases and/or CRMs (Slate, Peoplesoft, etc.)
