POSITION/JOB TITLE: Project Manager

DEPARTMENT: Engineering and Technology, Capital Execution

DIRECT SUPERVISOR: Director of Capital Projects

LOCATION: Lisle, IL corporate office or Project Location

TRAVEL: Extensive travel to project sites and contractor offices may be required.

POSITION SUMMARY: Total accountability for individual (or multiple) project performance to defined objectives.

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Typically manages projects <$10 million with responsibility for multiple projects which could total over $10 million.
  • As part of the project development team for plant projects, facilitates development of the project business case and justification, cost estimate, and project execution plan following the Front End Loading Process (FEL)
  • Clearly define Project scope, objectives and goals, communicates them to the team & all relevant stakeholders
  • Working with our customers & stakeholders; defines & communicates success
  • Integrate the activities necessary to develop the project plan, execute the project plan & make changes to the plan as required for success
  • Develops safety, quality, schedule and budget success metrics for the project, and once set, manages the project to achieve those objectives
  • Leads the development of a detailed project risk analysis and mitigation plan
  • Defines the right project organization for the assigned project, assembles the right resources and ensures role clarity, accountability, and individual responsibility for all team members including proposals and management of contractors
  • Manages day to day operational aspects of a project and scope
  • Reviews deliverables prepared by the team before passing to the client
  • Effectively applies best-in-class methodologies and enforces project standards
  • Responsible for the evaluation, selection and management of engineering contractors, material and equipment suppliers, and construction contractors for the project. Aligns team members, engineering companies, vendors and contractors to corporate and project goals
  • Lead person responsible for communicating with all internal and external stakeholders and occupies the center of the interactions between stakeholders and the project.
  • Measure and verify project performance, cost & schedule using generally accepted practices, tools & techniques
  • Regularly report progress & cost to stakeholders and management. Escalate if needed
  • Communicate clearly, keep team members engaged & motivated, resolve conflicts
  • Manage change through the COR process
  • Provides accurate and timely reporting of project metrics including schedule performance and cost performance including a regularly updated Estimate at Completion Cost
  • Conducts and/or attends engineering reviews and provides key inputs.
  • Organizes and conducts constructability, operability, and maintainability reviews with appropriate stakeholders
  • Ensures communication and coordination with SXC Operations and Maintenance to ensure a smooth commissioning, start-up, and turnover to Operations.
  • Participates in community relationship initiatives at project sites, and provides project updates and communications as required
  • Conducts lessons learned activities to identify the success factors and future improvements.
  • Accurately forecasts costs, revenue, profitability, margins Assures project legal and environmental requirements are met
  • Maintains awareness of new and emerging technologies and the potential application on the project
  • Conduct effective performance evaluations and mentors those with less experience.
  • Seeks feedback from and participates in development opportunities for project team

TECHNICAL SKILLS:

  • Solid knowledge of project management practices, understanding of project details and the ability to manage from the overall project perspective (safety, quality, costs, and schedules objectives within a project)
  • Understanding of safety, engineering, estimating, construction, team motivation, cost control, scheduling, progress and performance metrics.
  • Ability to prepare written reports, project correspondence, and contract management.
  • Understanding of basic revenue models, profit and loss, and cost to completion projections
  • Understanding of the FEL processes (A gated project process)
  • Ability to manage the project budget
  • Effective facilitation of team meetings
  • Strong communication skills
  • Timely resolution of issues
  • Strong computer skills.
  • Ability to participate in resolution of complex technical and commercial issues.
  • Strong leadership and leadership development skills while serving as a role model and mentor
  • Motivator of the team to work together in the most efficient manner

EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS / WORK EXPERIENCE: BS in Engineering. Minimum of five years of related industrial plant experience as a project manager, project engineer and/or a construction manager.

CERTIFICATIONS:

PMI PMP Certification Preferred

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS AND WORK ENVIRONMENT

  • Spend 25% or more of time in the field on feet in an environment with high heat, humidity, dust, as well as the potential for extreme cold
  • Willingness to be suited with full Personal Protective Equipment including fire retardant clothing, hard hat, steel toe boots, gloves, and eye protection (hearing protection as required) and other items as required
  • Ability to pass a fit test for respirator (project specific)

Regularly required to stand, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl and handle long walks for rounds

  • Regularly required to climb ladders and/or stairs and work at heights on permanent and/or temporary grating/platforms up to and including use of fall protection
  • Regularly required to work in confined spaces
  • Must be capable to lift and move up to 25 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds
  • Must be able to us use hands and fingers to handle equipment such as testing equipment, measuring equipment, etc.
  • Must have depth perception, peripheral vision, and the ability to adjust focus for close and distance vision (corrective lenses and glasses acceptable)
  • The employee is occasionally required to sit
