Position Overview

The following is intended to describe the general nature and level of work being performed. This list of duties is illustrative only and is not a comprehensive listing of all the functions and responsibilities performed.

Position Summary:Eastern New Mexico University's Department of Music is seeking qualified candidates to instruct undergraduate percussion majors, direct percussion ensembles, teach a percussion methods course for music education majors, and perform other duties as assigned by the chair, including oversight of percussion studio and student recruitment. The Department of Music, fully accredited by the National Association of Schools of Music since 1960, awards undergraduate degrees in Music, Music Education, and Music Performance. This is a full-time, tenure-track Assistant Professor position. This is a residential appointment with campus presence required.

Requirements

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Teach applied percussion lessons
  • Conduct percussion ensemble and steel band
  • Teach percussion methods class
  • Active scholarship and creative production including performance of solo/chamber recitals
  • Prepare student degree recitals
  • Academic advising
  • Service to the department, college, university, and external communities
  • Lead the Greyhound Sound Marching Band drumline
  • Recruit percussion majors and drumline members to the university
  • Manage the recording studio/MIDI Lab
  • Perform other duties as assigned

Required Qualifications:
  • Doctorate degree in music is required for tenure-track appointment; ABD considered
  • Experience in teaching applied percussion and percussion ensembles
  • Commitment to success in student recruitment and retention
  • Desire to teach, advise, and mentor students from diverse educational and cultural backgrounds
  • A consistent record of artistic/scholarly activity

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Successful college-level teaching experience
  • Background in music education
  • Commitment to a culture of service
  • Excellent interpersonal communication skills including ability to work with and build relationships with Music Educators throughout the region and state
  • Depending upon background, qualifications, and expertise, teach coursework in the Music Technology minor
  • Perform with regional orchestras and ensembles

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
  • Demonstrated commitment to fostering a diverse learning and working environment
  • Demonstrated leadership and enthusiasm for leading departmental student organizations
  • Commitment to creating and maintaining external relationships for student internships
Working Conditions

Physical Demand and Working Conditions:

  • Work is sedentary in nature that at times requires exerting up to 25 pounds of force occasionally and/or negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects.
  • This is a residential appointment starting in August 2024, with the candidate expected to relocate to the Portales, New Mexico area.
