Job Summary:

Provides assessment and goal oriented treatment for rehabilitation and/or modification of specific physical, mental, emotional or social behaviors.

Key Position Details:

This position is on the inpatient mental health units at Abbott Northwestern Hospital (Adult units primarily).

  • The Clinical Therapy team includes staff from multiple disciplines including Music Therapy, Occupational Therapy and Recreation Therapy.
  • The Clinical Therapy team provides group programming, individual assessments and interventions for patients on the inpatient mental health units. They are responsible for planning, leading and documenting group and individual therapy sessions for patients with acute, chronic and persistent mental illness and chemical dependency.
  • The Clinical Therapy team works very closely with the multidisciplinary inpatient care team including the psychiatrist/nurse practitioner, nurse, psychologist, internal medicine provider, social work, mental health coordinator, pharmacy and additional team members as needed.

Job Description:

Principle Responsibilities

  • Provide therapeutic recreation.
    • Plan, review and revise programs according to patient needs and professional trends in therapeutic recreation.
    • Develop and teach treatment programs to meet patient needs. Examples may include Tai Chi Chih, goal setting, community groups, aquatics etc.
    • Provide adequate supplies for patient treatment.
    • Maintain safety of patient and staff.
    • Clean and organize treatment space.
    • Document patient treatment goals and progress.
    • Provide leisure and community resources to patients.
  • Coordinate interdisciplinary communication.
    • Collaborate in interdisciplinary treatment planning and goal setting.
    • Convey observations and changes to the team.
    • Participate in problem solving with regard to treatment planning.
    • Provide student education and evaluation.
    • Other duties as assigned.


Job Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Recreational and Leisure studies with an emphasis in Therapeutic Recreation required
  • 0 to 2 years in a clinical specialty area or completion of a student internship in comparable setting required
  • Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialists - National Council for Therapeutic Recreation Certification preferred
