About the Job

The Chinese Flagship Program and the Department of Asian and Middle Eastern Studies invite applications for a part time Chinese language instructor for the 2024-25 academic year. This is a 75% time, 9-month Teaching Specialist position (job code 9754), August 26, 2024 to May 10, 2025 funded by the university's .

Responsibilities

Co-teach two undergraduate Chinese language courses per semester, including CHN 5041 Media Chinese.

Provide curricular and administrative support relating to teaching duties and course responsibilities, including course materials in academic major fields outside the humanities (business, engineering, medicine, etc.).

Create Chinese language materials for advanced-level tests, assessment, and tutoring advanced-level students in the Chinese Flagship Program.

Present workshops as needed for course coordination; assist Chinese Flagship Program with cultural events, recruitment, and student activities.

Engage in professional development activities.

Performance Standards

  1. Positive evaluations from students, Teaching Assistants (if appropriate), peers, and supervisors.
  2. Demonstration of commitment to quality teaching, program development, and professional development.
  3. Effective handling of student inquiries.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications

  1. Native or near-native fluency in Mandarin Chinese.
  2. Positive evaluations from students, peers, and/or supervisors.
  3. Demonstration of commitment to quality teaching and program development.
  4. Excellent verbal and written communication skills in English.
  5. B.A. or foreign equivalent in Chinese language or Teaching Chinese as a Foreign Language.

Preferred Qualifications

  1. M.A. or foreign equivalent in Chinese language or Teaching Chinese as a Foreign Language.
  2. Two or more years of university-level teaching and supervised tutoring to university students.
