Principal Transmission Engineer

Westwood Professional Services, Inc. is seeking a Principal Transmission Engineer to join our team. The Transmission Principal Engineer will be a part of the electric transmission design team and is considered a subject matter expert in their field. This candidate is responsible for the review multiple projects of a wide variety as well as the mentoring of lower-level engineers in the same department. This position provides the opportunity to directly apply your knowledge of transmission lines and other related subjects to assure the success of our exciting portfolio of power line work across the country.

As a Principal Engineer, you will apply NESC, NEC, ASCE and other applicable standards to assist in the development of standards and practices, the engineering review of projects, and the teaching of concepts to our staff.

Duties and Responsibilities

* Serves as an overhead transmission line design technical specialist and has knowledge and skillset to provide consultation and guidance to project teams.
* Review of all aspects of high voltage overhead transmission line projects including but not limited to: Line routing, Structure spotting, Structural analysis and design, Foundation design, Hardware selection, Conductor and shield wire selection, Material specifications, and technical support during construction.
* Develop technical specifications, specifications, QA/QC procedures, deliverable templates, and other means of increasing efficiency in our day-to-day operations.
* Assist clients with bid and evaluation processes, including structure procurement and construction services.
* Review design documents for construction, including plan & profiles, structure load tree drawings, structure framing, bill of materials and foundations design drawings.
* Understand and interpret geotechnical reports and extrapolate information needed for foundation design software including L-PILE and MFAD.
* Leverages experience by mentoring and training lower-level professionals including top graduates entering the field of transmission line design.
* Keenly focused on production of high-quality work and supports continuous improvement efforts.
* Understands client interests and develops approaches to accommodate these concerns in the performance of the work.
* Ability and willingness to travel to various locations and work sites to meet with clients and support project work.

* Demonstrating proficiency utilizing relevant design software and having the know how to teach members of the team.
* Experience mentoring others.
* Experience showing ability to work on multiple projects concurrently.

Required Skills

* 10+ years' design experience in the power industry.
* Bachelor of Science in Engineering from an ABET accredited Engineering program.
* PE License.
* Subject matter expert in associated field
* Advanced knowledge in the PLS Suite of software.
* Demonstrates proficiency in completing highly complex engineering tasks in the associated field by applying engineering theory and industry best practices.
* Ability to work independently on highly complex project assignments.
* Demonstrates good written and oral communication skills with internal and external stakeholders.
* Works well in a project team setting, displaying good collaboration skills.

Preferred Experience

* SE License
* Advanced degree in associated field
* Experience providing technical direction for a department/organization in field of expertise.
