What You'll Do
The Dakota County Transportation Department is seeking motivated individuals to fill permanent maintenance position(s). Transportation Maintenance IV staff perform operational tasks in the maintenance, repair and construction of Dakota County roadways. The position involves operating trucks, loaders, and highway equipment of all sizes to perform snow and ice removal. Work is performed under direct supervision and reviewed and evaluated primarily for work performance results obtained.

Regular hours for the positions are 7:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.; overtime and other shift hours will be required as weather conditions and seasonal construction projects demand. We currently have two full-time positions to fill.

Minimum Qualifications

* High School Diploma or equivalent (G.E.D.)
AND
* 2 years' experience driving commercial vehicles or operating light/heavy construction equipment in the fields of roadway maintenance/construction, landscaping, or construction.
AND
* Valid Class B CDL driver's license with air brake endorsement.

Future Licensure requirement:
* Possession of a valid Class A CDL driver's license with combination air brake and tanker endorsements within 6 months of hire.

Duties & Responsibilities

These examples do not include all possible tasks in this work and do not limit the assignment of related tasks in any position of this classification. Regular attendance according to the position's management approved work schedule is required for all positions.

1. Operate trucks for snow and ice removal including: hauling sand, mixing sand and salt, plowing and winging snow, and sanding and salting roads.
2. Perform routine maintenance including but not limited to: Patching/crack filling bituminous and manholes, repairing/crack filling concrete, sealing patches, spot graveling, cleaning/sweeping bridge cleaning/sweeping pavement decks, picking up debris, animals and Adopt a Highway bags.
3. 24-hour emergency response to weather including snow, ice, severe storms and flooding conditions and other traffic hazards including accidents and spills.
4. Repairs and replacements including reshaping minor shoulders, minor roadbeds, minor ditch and minor back slopes, hauling of gravel, spot graveling of roads, mud jacking, repairing of frost boils, flood damage repair, continuous graveling of roads, adding binder to road surface, stabilizing gravel surface continuous shoulder graveling.
5. Culvert maintenance including but not limited to: cleaning/thawing culverts and catch basins, seeding and sodding including turf establishment and planting trees and shrubs, minor cleaning of ditches, marking culvert ends, delivering and replacing new, larger and like size culverts, repairing culverts, guard rails, bridges, curbs, gutters, and washouts: roadbed, shoulder, ditch, backslope, and culvert. Storm clean-up.
6. Brush and weed control including mowing grass and weeds; spraying weeds and brush; and minor clearing and grubbing including cutting down trees.
7. Traffic services including, maintaining posted signs, inspecting roads, emergency assistance, detours and traffic and any engineering work done on a County project.
8. Safely operate heavy equipment and related transportation equipment to perform assigned duties.
9. Perform labor work with other County departments, municipalities, townships and MnDOT.
10. Maintain and clean Transportation facilities and equipment in Empire, Farmington and Hastings.
11. Repair mailboxes as requested by public and follow our replacement guidelines.
12. Meeting, classes and seminars to enrich the quality and efficiency of the job performance.
13. Perform all other miscellaneous maintenance activities as assigned.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS: Duties 1-11 are essential functions for permanent positions.

* Ability to read and comprehend material contained in such things as equipment manuals, procedure manuals, safety manuals and seminar information.

* Ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with management, fellow workers and the general public.
* Ability to perform strenuous work on a daily basis requiring physical strength and coordination.

Work Environment

Work is performed outdoors in all weather conditions and calls on the ability to perform strenuous physical tasks on a daily basis. The posture and movement requirement for this position are: sitting, standing, walking, balancing, bending/stooping on a frequent basis and twisting and reaching forward on a continuous basis. Position requires repetitive/constant bending of the arm and use of feet, and frequent grasping of hands. Staff must have the ability to rotate, flex and keep their head in a static position for driving. Work tasks require frequent lifting and carrying up to 10 pounds and occasional lifting up to 50 pounds. Although rare, some work may require lifting or carrying greater than 50 pounds and a team lift is encouraged.

Exposures may include, but are not limited to changing weather conditions, uneven and/or slippery surfaces, working at heights, dust, dirt, oil, grease, solvents, fumes, noise, sharp edges, and all hazards associated with an equipment repair shop. Position requires sensory demands of hearing, speech, near & far vision, tactile, and spatial perception. Driving is required for this position and staff must have the ability to use a variety of mowers, tractors, pickup trucks, heavy construction equipment, and snowplows. Equipment used but not limited to include: hand and power tools, shovels, saws, chainsaws, grinders, personal computer, personal safety equipment and any of a large list of light and heavy equipment.

This is an in-person position at our Transportation Maintenance Facility in Empire, MN.
