Under the direction of the principal investigator, the research project coordinator assists in coordinating Boston Children's Hospital's participation in a national collaborative quality improvement (QI) network called ImproveCareNow. This QI network involves a registry designed to study, understand, and improve patient care of children with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), a collection of chronic diseases that cause inflammation of the digestive or gastrointestinal tract. The selected candidate will interact with and enter data into this national QI registry, as well as coordinate other related projects.

Responsibilities span many aspects of study design and network collaboration, and may include: coordinating the collection of data and informed consent, interacting with the Institutional Review Board (IRB), assisting in the preparation of presentations, contributing to discussions within Boston Children's Hospital and the national QI network, and effectively gathering, entering, and analyzing accurate data from patient charts. The work for this project takes place in a fast-paced, dynamic environment with opportunities to interact with many different types of providers and other staff involved in healthcare.

The selected candidate must be highly motivated, well-organized, enthusiastic, and professional. The candidate must also be independent, efficient, and have exceptional interpersonal skills, as interaction with patients, families, medical staff, and other researchers is necessary. This work requires the level of knowledge acquired through completion of a bachelor's degree. Prior healthcare experience is a plus. Coursework in the biological or social sciences is recommended, and strong writing and analytical skills are required. This position is wonderful for an individual seeking to develop a career in medicine, public health, and/or quality improvement.

This Clinical Research Assistant I will be responsible for:

  • Coordinates data collection from clinic visits
  • Extracts patient information from medical records
  • Manages data entry and maintenance of study records
  • Communicates effectively with various care providers, clinical support staff, research staff, QI consultants, and other collaborators
  • Assists in regulatory documentation and development of protocols
  • Participates in the recruitment of patients
  • Facilitates and participates in QI activities
  • Prepares QI reports
  • Provides positive and effective customer service that supports departmental and hospital operations
  • Contributes to teamwork within and between departments and organizations
  • Prepares agendas and runs weekly project team meetings
  • Works with interns and/or students on the team
  • Represents the team on calls/webinars and at bi-annual network conferences
  • Performs other related duties as assigned

In order to qualify, you must have:

  • Bachelor's degree, preferably in the biological or health sciences, or related field
  • Critical attention to detail and accuracy
  • Computer skills, including fluency in Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint are required
  • Biostatistical skills and knowledge of basic data management software (SPSS, MS) are a plus
  • Ability to commit to at least one year
  • Start date in July 2024
