SUMMARY

Mortenson is currently seeking a Director of Accounting Operations, who will be responsible for the day-to-day leadership and strategic direction for core accounting, controls, and close processes across the organization, overseeing the Accounting Operations teams responsible for these areas across construction, development, real estate, and non-construction businesses and business models.

This position will be expected to standardize and optimize relevant accounting processes across legal entities, leveraging current (and future) technology to maximize efficiencies and drive increased productivity, while also ensuring financial information and activities are accounted for in compliance with applicable internal policies, controls, and technical accounting guidance.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Organize, delegate, and provide strategic direction for roles and responsibilities across the Accounting Operations teams responsible for various legal entities and financial areas.
  • Oversee accounting processes and activities across multiple businesses and business models. Ensure alignment with internal policies, controls, and technical accounting requirements.
  • Drive the development, implementation and maintenance of formal procedures and internal controls for key accounting processes and calculations. Ensure adherence to and appropriate segregation of duties in relation to all relevant internal controls.
  • Direct the coordination and execution of the month-end close process across the organization, including the establishment and maintenance of close-related timelines/responsibilities, communications, calculations, and quality control procedures.
  • Standardize and optimize accounting, control, and close processes across Accounting Operations, leveraging technology to maximize efficiencies across various businesses and business models; re-engineer complex processes to simplify and improve the overall experience for all relevant teams and internal customers involved. Oversee the documentation and review of process flows related to key accounting transactions / activities to clearly articulate and assess the relevant impact to affected financial processes and accounts.
  • Stay abreast of advancements in Oracle Cloud / other technology that could be leveraged to improve and / or transform accounting processes; assess and drive the implementation of technological advancements.
  • Establish a culture of continuous improvement across all responsible areas.
  • Provide operational leadership while supporting corporate business plans, related objectives, and budget requirements.
  • Build, manage, develop, and inspire a team of direct and indirect reports in the achievement of business and functional objectives. Implement improvements to enhance operating efficiency and reduce costs.
  • Develop and grow cross-functional relationships with Operations, other Finance functions, Business Service Groups, and other strategic partners to ensure the achievement of business objectives through collaboration, information sharing, and communication.
  • Effectively work and build relationships with those of diverse backgrounds and organizational levels
  • Other responsibilities, as assigned

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance or related field
  • 10-15 years of progressive accounting experience, including 5+ years leading a broad accounting function across multiple teams
  • CPA designation strongly preferred
  • Mix of public accounting and private industry accounting experience preferred
  • Demonstrated track record of success in leading complex accounting functions in an environment that has multiple businesses/business models
  • Oracle Cloud experience a strong plus
  • Construction, real estate, and development accounting experience a plus
  • Thorough knowledge of technical accounting principles / US GAAP, accounting processes / best practices, and internal controls.
  • Experience managing broad accounting functions/teams across multiple businesses/business models.
  • Experience leading multiple teams and team leaders in meeting expectations and related deadlines; ability to work with different personalities and work styles.
  • Strong leadership skills in managing and developing team members and team leaders, with the ability to create clear goals and foster accountability/ownership, while encouraging delegation at appropriate levels.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, including the ability to summarize and communicate complex technical or financial information to a non-technical audience.
  • Active listening skills and effective communication, including an openness to diverse input and feedback.
  • Ability to work cross-functionally across multiple departments in a collaborative, team-based environment.
  • Professional, business-driven mentality with the ability to communicate and interact with all levels of the organization, as well as external parties. Ability to handle confidential information in a discrete, professional manner.
