The R&D Analytical Lab Metallurgy Manager has managerial, leadership, and staff development responsibilities and connects the lab function and lab customers on technical matters.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Assists in and/or manages functional deliverables and ensures technical excellence for material, process, and product development support to R&D and commercial product sustaining support to Operations.

  • Leads function test equipment sustaining and replacement projects.

  • Provides guidance and approval regarding technical strategies and approaches for execution of analytical services to lab customers.

  • Provides guidance and training to staff, assists subordinates in attaining career goals, motivates individuals to achieve results, and recruits and maintains a high quality staff.

  • Assists in and/or completes the development of budgets and monitors spending.

  • Assists in identifying and developing department function equipment, software, supplies, and tools.

  • Assists in and/or determines appropriate staff levels, schedules and resources. Works with lab customers and project leaders to understand priorities and plans resource and time allocation accordingly.

  • Collaboratively determines project staff assignments and schedules work to meet completion dates and deliverables.

  • Maintains and enhances cross-functional team relationships within the department and with lab customer groups and service partners.

  • Works cross-functionally in identifying and resolving technical issues.

  • Monitors and evaluates project and department progress and results.

  • Reviews records and deliverables from the team for technical competency and compliance with department and company policies and procedures.

  • Executes or delegates and guides non-conformance investigations and reporting.

Quality Systems Requirements:

  • In all actions, demonstrates a primary commitment to patient safety and product quality by maintaining compliance to the Quality Policy and all other documented quality processes and procedures.

  • Assures that appropriate resources (personnel, tools, etc.) are maintained in order to assure Quality System compliance and adherence to the department and BSC Quality Policy.

  • Establishes and promotes a work environment that supports the Quality Policy and Quality System.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor of Science degree in Materials Science Engineering, Metallurgical Engineering, or in Mechanical Engineering or Biomedical Engineering with work experience emphasis in metallurgy

  • 5 years of work experience in industry as an individual contributor performing materials science engineering or metallurgical engineering tasks

  • 3 years of work experience in industry as a metallurgy project team leader or functional metallurgy service team leader with engineering professional and technician direct reports

  • Work experience in goal-setting and in providing on-going coaching and performance feedback to direct reports

Preferred Qualifications:

  • 5 years of work experience in industry as an individual contributor in a materials science engineering analytical laboratory

  • 3 years of work experience in industry as a project leader or functional team leader in a materials science engineering analytical laboratory

  • 3 of the years of work experience in a medical device company

  • Work experience in industry performing hands-on metallography, mechanical testing, SEM fractography, EDS surface chemistry analysis, and or corrosion resistance testing of austenitic stainless steel alloy components, NiTi alloy components, weldments, and laser machined and electropolished surfaces

  • Work experience performing engineering peer reviews and manager reviews of engineering test records and reports for technical competency and quality compliance with company and department SOP's and test methods

  • Knowledge of and working experience with metallurgical lab test equipment hardware and software
