The Assistant Professor, Medical Sciences will participate in the planning, implementation, and delivery of appropriate histology, cytology, anatomy, and pathology content in the SOM's pre-clerkship curriculum. In particular, the identified educator will be expected to manage interactive histology laboratory sessions across the highly integrated active-learning curriculum. The Assistant Professor, Medical Sciences will also engage with and provide guidance/mentorship for students, serve in various committee roles, and actively pursue independent scholarship and/or research, as appropriate.

Responsibilities

A day in the life of a Assistant Professor, Medical Sciences at Hackensack Meridian Health includes:

  • Participate in the School of Medicines medical education program, which features an integrated 3+1 curriculum that allows students to develop an individualized 4th year program following a 3-year core curriculum. The curriculum emphasizes lifelong learning by students and the use of active learning pedagogy by faculty.
  • Oversee histology curriculum a fundamental thread that emphasizes structure-function relationships through integrated cell biology and physiology perspectives.
  • Play a role in design of additional integrated pathology and laboratory medicine experiences for our students.
  • Provide service to the School of Medicine and professional committees/communities.
  • Be actively involved in curriculum evaluation and improvement. Advise students.
  • Assist in various LCME, MSCHE, OSHE, NJ-BME, and DOE accreditation/reaccreditation activities.
  • Engage in research and scholarship to advance medical education and scientific knowledge.
  • Perform other faculty duties and assume academic roles commensurate with rank and experience.
  • Other duties and/or projects as assigned.
  • Adhere to HMH Organizational competencies and standards of behavior.

Qualifications

Education, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required:

  • Terminal degree (Ph.D., M.D., D.O.) with specialization in a basic/clinical science field.
  • Expertise in one or more of the following Histology, Pharmacology, Physiology, Pathology, Immunology/Microbiology, Anatomy/Neuroanatomy.
  • Evidence of excellence in teaching in an undergraduate medical education and/or other health science settings.

Education, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Preferred:

  • Skilled digital anatomic pathologist.
  • Exerience in (clinical) laboratory setting. Experience in teaching medical students topics including anatomy and/or pathology.
  • Understanding of team-based, problem-based, and case-based learning with students in both large and small class settings.
  • Demonstrated scholarship (e.g., publications, patents, extramural grant-funding, reaearch, etc.) in a relevant professional field.
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively employ active learning pedagogies.
  • Demonstrated experience and ability in developing integrated medical science course materials for undergraduate medical students in both preclinical and clinical phases.
  • Skills necessary to contribute to the continued development of a department of medical sciences at an emergent allopathic medical school.
  • Experience in LCME accreditation activities and development of new medical schools.
