Summary:

Mortenson is currently seeking an experienced Engineer II - Civil/Structural, responsible for a broad range of detailed engineering designs for high voltage substation and transmission projects through 500 kV.

Candidate will be responsible for working closely with other engineering and design team members to coordinate overall design packages and requirements. They will be responsible for performing a broad scope of engineering assignments of moderate difficulty requiring knowledge in engineering-related disciplines. They shall be capable of evaluating, selecting, and applying standard engineering techniques, procedures, and criteria by using judgment in making adaptations and modifications and providing interpretations and conclusions with.

Hiring Location: Minneapolis, MN, San Antonio, TX, Denver, CO or Fargo, ND offices.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Duties include the development of the design basis philosophy and other aspects of the design including line routing, structure selection & design, plan & profile drawings, foundation design, hardware & conductor selection, equipment & construction specifications, and all associated calculations on substation and transmission design projects.
  • Works semi-independently with direction from Engineering Lead, Principal Engineer, or Engineering Manager.
  • Comfortable interfacing and presenting to multiple stakeholders (e.g. customer decision makers, project teams, etc.).
  • Provide technical support to personnel/cross functional teams for proposals, estimating, procurement and construction.
  • Coordinate with other engineering disciplines, Project Managers, and Design Phase Managers to successfully deliver design projects.
  • Participate on project teams that execute the design, analysis, or evaluation of assigned individual and team projects using sound engineering principles and adhering to business standards, practices, procedures, and product / program requirements.
  • Begins performing lead technical designer tasks on 1 - 3 large design projects annually across all project scopes.
  • Mentor and guide other Engineering Professionals.
  • Review and approve equipment vendor drawings and sign off on testing report on major equipment from manufacturers with Lead Engineers review.
  • Collects and evaluates data to recommend courses of action.
  • Assure proper documentation of technical data generated for the assigned projects and/or tasks consistent with engineering policies and Mortenson QA/QC procedures
  • Performs data analysis and engineering tasks, calculations and studies to develop preliminary and detailed designs for completion of large and small projects.
  • Developing technical specifications, providing direction and guidance to drafters and designers, directing the flow of drafting and designer duties, insuring design schedules are met, including regularly providing project status updates to project engineer.
  • Responsible for handling multiple projects and providing a detailed design package that complies with applicable engineering design standards and all safety codes.
  • Strong understanding of discipline specific technical designs, QA/QC procedures, and engineering policies.
  • Advanced knowledge of engineering principles, business standards, practices, procedures, and product / program requirements.
  • Plans and conducts work requiring judgment in the evaluation, selection, and adaptation or modification of standard techniques, procedures, and criteria.
  • Review of engineering work produces a first-time review rate of documents at 80% correct.
  • Verify that construction is in agreement with civil engineering design drawings, including preparatory meetings, and QA/QC.
  • Develops and evaluates the technical requirements for fabrication and construction tender packages.
  • Creates detailed designs aligned with our customer requirements and Mortenson's best practice standards.

QUALICIATIONS

  • Graduate of four-year college or university with Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering (BSCE) or related Engineering program. Strongly preferred the degree is from a school of engineering with at least one curriculum accredited by the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET) as a professional engineering curriculum.
  • Engineering-in-Training (EIT) certification or achievement of EIT within 6 months of entering position.
  • Basic knowledge of ASCE Substation Structure Design Guide and NESC code requirements and transmission & structure design is required.
  • Experienced in engineering theories and principles.
  • Experienced in practices of researching engineering and design issues, evaluating alternatives, making sound recommendations and preparing and presenting recommendations.
  • Basic knowledge in system and structure modeling, and foundation and steel design for systems ranging from 34.5 kV to 345kV.
  • Minimum 2+ years related work experience in the T&D industry.
  • Have working knowledge of or are familiar with software packages: PLS-CADD, PLS Pole, AutoCAD
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Ability to travel up to 30%.
