Job Description

The Supervisor, Nursing Practice and Education will partner with the nursing leaders across the St. Croix Valley to coordinate and lead the design, development, implementation, and ongoing improvement of nursing education programs (based on needs assessment, regulatory requirements, organizational priorities and standards, evidence-based practice, and quality improvement plans). The supervisor also represents the Valley from a system perspective to propose, vet, research, and implement practice changes. The role is focused on influencing patient care, nursing practice that culminates in building, monitoring, and adapting educational programs. The role coordinates complex patient care, evaluates patient care outcomes, utilizes and participates in clinical research, provides professional consultation and promotes interdisciplinary collaboration. This role also develops tools (e.g., critical pathways, order sets, guidelines, protocols and policies) which facilitate care rendered by others in practice. This role embeds evidence into clinical practice, provides leadership in quality improvement, and provides innovative solutions throughout the system. The coordinated initiative of nursing education and practice will result in improved quality and outcomes for nursing education, professional development, and related functions at Lakeview Hospital, Hudson Hospital and Clinic, Westfields Hospital and Clinic, and Amery Regional Medical Center.

Essential Duties:

  • Provides supervision for the Valley site educators
    • Oversees and directs the work of the Valley site educators
    • Provides consistent and timely feedback.
    • Develops and provides on-boarding of new employees as well as coordinate ongoing training for existing employees
    • Conducts annual performance evaluations in a timely and constructive manner
  • Develops, plans, and evaluates nursing education programs and educational outcomes, including orientation, for nursing staff.
    • Utilizes professional assessment tools to assess competency in both inexperienced and experienced RN, LPN, PCT, and ERT positions and provides recommendation for individualized orientation program.
    • Conducts and analyzes learning needs of nursing personnel using data from a variety of sources including participant learning needs, through collaboration and feedback from nursing leaders, previous program participants, performance in clinical practices and professional assessment tools.
    • Ensures that nursing curriculum places emphasis and prioritizes the mission and goals of the Valley and HealthPartners.
    • Coordinates and leads the design, development, implementation, evaluation and revisions of educational programs based on needs assessment, quality improvement initiatives, and consultation with nursing staff and leadership.
    • Collaborates with appropriate nursing leadership, including nurse managers, specialty advanced practice nurses, and decentralized nursing educators to design orientation, preceptor program, remediation training, and evaluation of training and learner outcomes.
    • Ensure orientation programs include documented goals, objectives, appropriate support materials and evaluations or learning.
    • Conducts formal curriculum review annually through cross0functional work teams and makes changes to incorporate practice changes and quality initiatives on an ongoing and as needed basis.
    • Represents the Education Department on a variety of cross-functional teams and quality initiatives to lead or co-lead the development of training for nursing staff.
  • Coordinates and delivers training and education programs.
    • Incorporates clinical experts such as advanced practice nurses, specialty or certified registered nurses, physicians, and other allied health care professionals in the delivery of training and education as appropriate.
    • Develops and incorporates a variety of effective adult learner-centered and performance-based training methods, resources, and techniques into all nursing education programs.
    • Engages learners through use of above techniques.
    • Critically evaluates personal teaching style and modifies to achieve greater effectiveness. Participates in peer review process to improve educational outcomes.
  • Provides resources for coaching and mentoring of nursing staff who serve as clinical preceptors and educators.
    • Coaches nursing staff who engage in education of patients and other staff to improve their skills as performance-based instructors.
    • Maintains oversight for the development, management, promotion, evaluation, and growth of the preceptor and mentor programs.
    • Provides orientation and regular training in adult learning and learner-centered training for decentralized nurse educators, preceptors, and mentors.
    • Collaborates with nursing leadership including nurse managers, advanced practice nurses, and decentralized nurse educators, to conduct regular assessment and performance evaluations and remediation training for preceptors.
    • Provides input for annual performance evaluations for nursing staff, and nursing leadership.
  • Develops, plans, coordinates, and evaluates other education programs for nursing staff and affiliated nursing school and other programs.
    • Evaluates needs for learning related to special projects, initiatives or on-going staff development and education through a variety of methods including observation of clinical practice, feedback from staff and nursing leaders, knowledge of clinical practice changes and directives of regulatory agencies.
    • Provides leadership and is a resource for the Site Nurse Educator in coordinating nursing students' clinical unit assignments, preceptorships, and other activities for affiliated nursing and other programs as needed.
    • Collaborates with nursing leadership including nurse managers, advanced practice nurses, and decentralized educators to develop professional development programs through both internal and external training programs, such as certification training, advanced courses in specialty areas, and augmented practice training.
    • Reviews programs regularly including continued need for the learning activity.
  • Maintains competency and keeps up to date on clinical knowledge for the patient populations served by the employees who are taught.
    • Maintains cultural and age specific competence.
    • Maintains current knowledge of hospital procedures and patient care practices specific to areas taught.
    • Maintains certification in area of specialization.
    • Maintains professional expertise though reading, attending in-services, conferences, etc.
    • Completes required annual education.
    • Leads the annual Competency Assessment Process for nursing - to identify new/critical/required competencies and corresponding educational requirements.
  • Guides the delivery of evidence-based nursing practice, and evidence-based patient care to positively impact outcomes.
    • Collaborates regularly with nursing and other disciplines in assessing, planning, implementing, and evaluating nursing care for challenging, complex or high-risk patients or assigned populations.
    • Provides direct consultation to nursing staff and other disciplines in the care of patients.
    • Serves as the nursing subject matter expert to assigned nursing sensitive indicators, contributes to patient care through patient/family advocacy, incorporating respect for and acknowledgement of cultural diversity and individual needs.
  • Leads and collaborates to ensure standards of nursing practice and evidence-based standards of patient care are provided.
    • Assesses and evaluates nursing practice and patient care for assigned areas on a regular basis to ensure standards are met with special attention to patient safety, timeliness, effectiveness, efficiency, equitable, and patient centeredness.
    • knowledge of regulatory influences (e.g., CMS, TJC) and applies those standards to nursing practice on a continual basis,
    • Maintains knowledge of infection control principles and practices and applies those standards in [practice on a continual basis.
    • Maintains and communicates knowledge of best practice guidelines for patient populations served on a continual basis.
    • Assesses needs and based on need, develops plans that ensure standards of nursing practice and standards of patient care are provided.
    • Maintains a continuous improvement mindset and applies methodologies to improve outcomes.
    • Collaborates regularly with other nursing leaders and education partners to ensure standards of practice and standards of care are developed and maintained in written documents.
  • Collaborates with leaders and education partners in ensuring educational outcomes and staff developments needs are met.
    • Assesses needs of assigned areas for staff development and competency development.
    • Evaluates the global outcomes of orientation and education programs.
    • Collaborates with education partners to ensure curriculum content for initial orientation and ongoing staff education is current and evidence based.
    • Collaborates to provide clinical coaching with mentoring of staff as requested and appropriate.
    • Provides consultation to education partners in the development of preceptors.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
    • As needed, leads, and participates in groups for the purpose of developing and implementing systematic solutions to patient care issues,
    • Identifies areas for quality monitoring on a regular basis, directs and participates in performance improvement activities.
    • Maintains active participation in external professional activities and networks both locally and nationally.
    • Published professional work and/or presents at professional meetings.

    • Accepts responsibility for orienting new staff as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Master's degree (MSN) with completion of required education prerequisites to be certified as Clinical Nurse Specialist (CNS)
  • 5 years hospital nursing experience
  • 3 years clinical education experience, preferably in a hospital setting
  • Experience in curriculum design, development, and facilitation
  • At least 2 years (4,160 hours) functioning as a CNS in critical or acute care.
  • Current WI APRN licensure (or willingness to obtain upon hire)
  • Current MN APRN licensure (or willingness to obtain upon hire)
  • Board certified as a Clinical Nurse Specialist
