About the Job

A research scientist (Researcher 6) is sought in the Department of Diagnostic and Biological Sciences to study the molecular mechanism of enveloped virus membrane fusion. The successful candidate will participate in the design, implementation, and evaluation of research studies as well as involvement in collaboration and publication of findings. The projects are funded by NIH and will be conducted in Dr. Wei Zhang's laboratory. More duties and responsibilities are:

  • Study the specific aims of a proposal. Act as a project leader and interact/coordinate with similar research projects.
  • Conduct research projects and coordinate the analysis, evaluation, and report on phases of the project(s); this may include developing research plans and solving highly complex methodology, protocol, procedural, and research problems through the original design of protocols, policies, and procedures, frequently involving researching advanced concepts and developing original solutions in the absence of clear standards.
  • Interpret complex data and advise the principal investigator and others within the work unit, department, outside investigators within and outside the University on research techniques, procedures, experimental results, and grant proposals.
  • Analyze experimental data to test hypotheses and interpret results. Prepare and interpret results for publications and presentations.
  • Serves as an expert resource to lab members, outside collaborators, and the scientific community in certain applications or areas of concentration.
  • May supervise the build-out of new lab space interacting with various parties (e.g. Health and Safety, Facilities) as needed.
  • Direct and supervise undergraduate and graduate students to assist in preparation and performance of studies.
  • Instruct and supervise new personnel in various lab technologies and techniques appraising their outcomes and evaluating their performance.
  • Meet with collaborators to develop and supervise the development, optimization and utilization of various technologies, instrumentation, and equipment and devices to achieve research objectives.
Qualifications

Required Qualifications:

  • Advance degree with substantial research and publication record.
  • High self-motivation, a well-organized working style, and good teamwork ethics.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • A PhD in biochemistry, cell biology, structural biology, or related field.
  • Experience in molecular virology, protein structure determination.
  • Experience in cryo-EM and cryo-ET image processing methods.
