Description

Position Overview:
The Controls Engineer supports the design, implementation, and maintenance of process control systems (including electrical, mechanical, and chemical control devices) for Gopher Resource's manufacturing operations. They will be involved in the programming, maintenance and troubleshooting of electrical devices such as PLC's, VFD's and HMI's. The Controls Engineer will also support the creation and modification of electrical drawings and control circuits.


Critical Success Criteria:

  • Be a subject matter expert to support the safe, environmentally sound, and efficient operations of plant control systems
  • Take requests from both technical and non-technical teams to identify solutions that align with corporate control systems standards and industry best practices
  • Support control systems enhancements and modification, maintaining documentation integrity
  • Effectively communicate and collaborate across organizational boundaries


Responsibilities:

  • Assist with the specification, procurement, installation, and commissioning of new instrumentation and control systems
  • Day-to-day control systems health monitoring, troubleshooting and performance optimization
  • Develop and maintain power distribution and control panel electrical drawings
  • Develop human machine interface (HMI) controls following high performance HMI principles, industry standards, and best practices
  • Develop state based, procedural automation controls following industry standards and best practices
  • Perform detailed review of control system design and configuration documentation
  • Lead and implement control systems upgrade and improvement projects
  • Supervise and manage external contractors to complete project work to meet schedule and budget commitments
  • Effectively communicate project plans, timing, and status to project teams and other management members
  • Provide technical coaching and support to maintenance and operations teams
  • Responds to emergency and service calls that occur outside normal working hours
  • Collaborate with Controls team to transfer technical knowledge and experience


Requirements:

  • 2-year technical degree from an accredited school OR current enrollment in a 4-year engineering program from an accredited school with at least 50% completion minimally required
  • 5+ years of previous work experience in a controls engineering role
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Windows, Microsoft Office, Ethernet networks, and Servers
  • Previous development experience with Aveva System Platform (Wonderware) or similar SCADA systems
  • Previous development experience with FactoryTalk View or similar HMI programming software
  • Process automation systems development experience using Rockwell Logix/Studio family of software
  • Previous experience with testing, diagnosing, troubleshooting, and debugging software systems
  • Demonstrable knowledge of electrical and electronic systems
  • Ability to understand schematics, wiring diagrams, ladder diagrams, and one-line diagrams
  • Effective interpersonal skills, including establishing trust, conflict resolution, and written & verbal communication
  • Willingness and ability to wear respirator mask directly against skin with or without reasonable accommodation

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering or related field from an accredited College or University strongly preferred, but not required
  • Previous work experience in a metal casting, foundry, or similar manufacturing operation preferred, but not required
  • Previous work experience with PLC networks (Ethernet/IP and ControlNet) preferred, but not required
  • Working knowledge of AutoCAD software preferred, but not required
  • Ability to design new control panels and direct/assist electricians with new and existing installations and upgrades preferred, but not required
