About the Job

The Department of Statistics in the College of Liberal Arts at the University of Minnesota occasionally needs Teaching Specialists or Lecturers to teach courses that cannot be staffed by regular faculty or graduate students. Openings of this kind sometime occur for teaching evening and summer session, as well as day courses and courses offered through Independent and Distance Learning. The courses are primarily introductory or survey courses. These positions are temporary and part-time.

This does not constitute a posting for vacancies, but establishes a pool of applicants should openings occur during the 2023-2024 academic year. Applicants will be selected from this pool on an as-needed basis through academic year. Appointments may be renewable based on need, funding, and performance.

Teaching Specialists and Lecturers will be expected to teach undergraduate or graduate students in assigned course(s), hold office hours to assist and advise students, and participate in relevant departmental meetings.

The responsibilities of the job are to prepare for and conduct classes, supervise teaching assistants, hold office hours, turn in grades, respond to student and department inquiries, submit an activity report, attend meetings, turn in student evaluations. The candidate should be open to teach both in person and online modalities.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications:

  • Minimum Qualifications for Teaching Specialist position: Master's degree in statistics or closely related quantitative field, and college level teaching experience in Statistics.
  • Minimum Qualifications for Lecturer position: PhD degree in Statistics or closely related field, and six months teaching experience in an academic institution.

About the Department

The School of Statistics was founded in 1971 as a successor to the Department of Statistics founded in 1958 as a center for research and teaching in statistical theory and in applied statistics. In addition, since its founding the School has provided consulting to University researchers on the application of statistical methodology in their work. We offer courses leading MS and PhD degrees, and to bachelor's degrees in both the College of Liberal Arts and in the College of Science and Engineering.
