About the Job

Dr Seth Thompson, Dr James Cotner, Dr Trinity Hamilton and Dr William Harcombe are recruiting a postdoctoral researcher for a 2-year, collaborative project funded by the University of Minnesota's MnDRIVE Environments Program titled: "Understanding the aquatic carbon cycle through community engaged research".

The position will be based at the University of Minnesota - Twin Cities campus in the Department of Ecology, Evolution, and Behavior in St. Paul Minnesota. The postdoctoral researchers will play a central role in a project to determine how nutrient availability impacts the production, degradation, and composition of DOM and to better understand the impact of nutrient pollution on aquatic carbon sequestration. Uniquely, this project will use a community-engaged research framework to work with local high school partners to execute the project. Through our work on DOM and engagement with high school students as co-investigators, this project will both contribute to fundamental understanding of the aquatic carbon cycle that are imperative for developing effective management practices for reducing environmental degradation, while increasing student environmental research capabilities, environmental awareness and connections to nature. The postdoctoral researcher will be expected to lead both laboratory and field sampling efforts as well as actively mentor (with support from the project team) several high school student researchers. A demonstrated interest in both aquatic ecology/biogeochemistry and science education or experience with student mentorship will be important in this role.

The post-doctoral researcher will be part of a highly collaborative research team with decades of experience in both aquatic ecology and mentoring students at various stages of education. This position will provide robust training in data collection and analyses, in addition to manuscript preparation; guidance in career development; and opportunities for outreach and community engagement. The postdoctoral researchers will serve as a primary mentor to high school student researchers and provide subject matter expertise in developing novel classroom curriculum. The project requires a small amount of local travel (for field studies and community engagement).
