Job Description

JOB SUMMARY:

Responsible for performance and reporting of clinical laboratory testing using a variety of automated, semi-automated and manual technologies.  Responsible for the accurate and timely reporting of test results, initial troubleshooting of problems, instrument maintenance and following safe laboratory practices.

Specific Knowledge, Skills, and Capabilities:

  • Must be able to demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to patients of all age groups (neonatal through geriatric).
  • Must have manual dexterity to perform venipunctures safely and accurately.
  • Ability to identify problems that may adversely affect test performance or reporting of test results.
  • Must possess knowledge of lab testing capabilities for Immunohematology, Chemistry, Hematology, Coagulation, Serology,      Urinalysis, Microbiology and Phlebotomy.

 

JOB DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
 

  • Under direction, follows all department policies, procedures and systems.
  • Provides a warm welcome and excellent customer service to our patients and visitors.
  • Completes necessary laboratory documentation.
  • Collects lab specimens and evaluates their acceptability.
  • Utilizes the principles of continuous quality improvement to enhance departmental and organizational processes, outcomes and customer satisfaction.
  • Participates in and contributes to department-wide programs to meet strategic objectives, mandatory education needs and organizational initiatives.
  • Follow the laboratory’s procedures for specimen handling and processing test analyses, reporting and maintaining records of patient results.
  • Maintain records that demonstrate that proficiency testing samples are tested in the same manner as patient specimens.
  • Adhere to the laboratory’s quality control policies, document all quality control activities, instrument and procedural calibrations and maintenance performed.
  • Review quality control data looking for trends, shifts or patterns.
  • Assumes primary role for Hudson Laboratory LIS projects and testing.
  • Responsible for reviewing reference lab billing and assisting the revenue cycle team with laboratory charge questions.
  • Assists with additional QA tasks such as result review, proficiency testing paperwork, and competency assessments.
  • Assists with writing and revising procedures.
  • Takes lead for training of new personnel and students.
  • Participates in special projects as assigned by the Laboratory Manager
  • Demonstrates job knowledge of good laboratory practice.
  • Follow the laboratory’s established policies and procedures whenever test systems are not within the laboratory’s defined acceptable levels of performance.
  • Be capable of identifying problems that may adversely affect test performance or reporting of test results and either must correct the problems or immediately notify the laboratory general supervisor or director.
  • Document all corrective actions taken when test systems deviate from the laboratory’s established performance characteristics.
  • Utilize technical background knowledge of laboratory medicine across all areas of the laboratory. These include Immunohematology, Chemistry, TDM, Hematology, Coagulation, Serology, Urinalysis, Microbiology, and Phlebotomy.
  • Observes all safety and compliance requirements.
  • Coordinates departmental workload and troubleshoots problems in the managers absence.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Requirement:

  • Bachelor of Science degree in Medical Technology or related field
  • Current certification as Medical Technoloist (MT/CLS/MLS) or equivalent by a national board of registry ASCP
  • Minimum of two years hospital laboratory expereience preferred
