Summary
The Consulting or Senior Engineer provides technical consultation and expertise in the geological/geotechnical engineering field. Ensure compliance with regulatory requirements for ash disposal units. The engineer will collaborate with Corporate Environmental group on EPA, Navajo EPA, ADEQ and ADWR regulations and requirements. The Engineer will develop state-of-the-art solution(s) to complex problems, meeting challenging time schedules and supporting multi-discipline teams. Requires an extensive knowledge and application of unique problem-solving techniques using analytical and numerical methodologies. Long standing membership and participation in recognized industry and/or professional organizations is expected. Must possess in-depth design, construction and operational knowledge applicable to the respective industry or equivalent.
Geological / geotechnical - Minimum of 10 years' experience preferred
Soils engineer with design experience in soils inside and outside of the power block including:
  • Earthwork construction
  • Mining excavation
  • Retention walls and structures
Civil or Mining Engineering with experience in ash pond or mine tailing ponds design, maintenance, and monitoring with specific experience in:
  • Slope stability
  • Seepage
  • Soils mechanics
  • Geosynthetic liner materials Installation and design (HDPE etc.)
Minimum Requirements

Consulting Engineer

A four year Bachelor of Science degree in an engineering discipline or related applied science discipline (see approved list) from an ABET accredited institution plus 14 years of applied electric utility generation, transmission or distribution engineering experience. OR, MS/MEng degree or PE plus 12 years of applied electric utility generation, transmission or distribution engineering experience.

At least seven (7) years of accumulated experience must be directly related to the assigned Business Unit function.

Relevant experience from other industries will be considered. All applicants for this position must be reviewed and approved by the Business Unit Head of Engineering.Approved Engineer degrees: Materials Science/Metallurgy, Physics, Chemistry, Math, Nuclear, Electrical, Mechanical, Civil, Electronics, Computer Science, Environmental, Chemical, Architectural, Structural. (A four-year bachelor of Engineering Technology degree is not considered an automatic equivalent for a B.S. degree in Engineering. A review of the degree program curriculum must be completed by the Engineering Career Path Review Board to determine equivalency level).

Fossil Generation requirement: For Four Corners Civil Engineering positions responsible for the site's Earthen Dams, Professional Engineering registration is required by the state.

Engineer Senior

Requires Bachelor's degree in Engineering (applicable engineering discipline specific to area of assignment)plus eight (8) years engineering experience,or Professional Engineer designation plus eight (8) years engineering experienceor 12 years equivalent combination of technical education and experience.

Must possess in depth knowledge of energy analysis, engineering applications, business, and finance, applicable codes, standards practices and methods in the area of assigned discipline.

Preferred experience:

  • CCR (Coal Combustion Residual) disposal regulations

  • EPA CCR regulations, effluent limitation guidelines or become familiar with these regulations in 4 months

Major Accountabilities

1) Provides efficient and practical solutions in a timely manner for Business Unit highly complex and critical issues. Ensures solutions are technically sound, meet safety considerations, are cost effective and in compliance with established standards, codes and regulations.
2) Provides mentoring and consultation to engineers in assigned Business Unit.
3) Performs consultation on highly complex and unique technical issues which lack engineering precedent and require the application of advanced engineering principles.
4) Develops and/or maintains computer software necessary for performing sophisticated analyses and evaluations on Business Unit systems and equipment.
5) Reviews and performs failure mode analysis on major equipment components and develops plans for prediction/prevention of failure, as applicable.
6) Provides effective and timely technical support to Operations and Maintenance.
7) Formulates procedures and coordinates non-routine performance tests on principle systems and equipment.
8) Develops, maintains or provides input to company practices to maintain compliance with industry regulatory standards and conformance with industry technical standards.
9) May direct the efforts of and/or support multi-discipline teams of other engineers, technicians and specialists in performing studies and other assigned projects.
10) Participates in industry and/or professional organizations.
11) Prepares publications and/or papers for industry periodicals, meetings and/or conferences.

This position is not required to be performed at a specific APS facility as long as adequate technology and a solid ergonomic set up are present. Pending agreement with leadership, employees hired into this role will be able to choose where they prefer to perform their work. Employees will have two options to choose from:

  • APS office based: The employee prefers to work most of the time from an APS facility.
  • Home based: The employee prefers to work most of the time from his/her home.

*Employees in Flex roles are required to reside in Arizona (or NM for Four Corners-based employees). Role types are subject to change based on business need.
