What success looks like in this role:

POSITION DETAILS
Position Overview:

Working closely with DST Group researchers, this position will assist with the Build, Run and Document of Cutting edge computational Research Networks and Trials Systems. The role will perform through life support of specialised and experimental systems and ensure security compliance of Research Environments in line with ASD ISM and Defence standards. You will manage multiple logically separated and intersecting unique research environments, customised for research purposes and connected to a variety of scientific instrumentation. You will be required to interpret and understand research requirements, develop bespoke solution sets and assist with the design and maintenance of new, novel and emerging research systems. Working with a wide variety of high and low level scientific equipment interfaces the incumbent will enable the integration of highly technical research components into scientific computing infrastructure. Working alongside Infrastructure Operations and Security teams you will ensure the effective management of Systems and Networks that reside on and/or connect into the wider DST network.

Duties:
  • Build, Deploy and document specialised research ICT infrastructure into experimental labs and deployable constructs as required.
  • Facilitate connectivity between experimental system components and DST core research networks, adhering to required security protocols and processes.
  • Configuration management of research system hardware. Collaborate with the researchers to resolve issues within a lab or experimental system.
  • Operate highly technical research components and scientific computing infrastructure.
  • May require a high degree of responsiveness during trials or experiments, flexible working arrangements may apply where required.
  • Will include some or all of the following
    • Research Network device administration
    • Firewall policy administration/co-ordination
    • Liaison with CIOG.
    • Intensive, high volume Research Data Storage administration.
    • Server and workstation management and administration
    • Laboratory instrumentation connectivity to experimental systems, and throughput to DSTG's primary research networks.
    • Experimental system operating systems (Linux and Windows) and research software (including DST designed bespoke software) support and licensing.
    • Support of research DevOps platforms and modelling and simulation environments
    • Asset management (request creation and update as required)

You will be successful in this role if you have:

SKILL AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS
Mandatory
  • Demonstrable ability to use current knowledge, upskill and/or seek expertise to implement architecturally designed digital solutions, or solve complex ICT problems to achieve organisational outcomes.
  • Demonstrated ability to rapidly uptake unfamiliar technology.
  • Exceptional troubleshooting/fault-finding skills
  • Hold appropriate vendor certifications or demonstrate significant practical experience
  • Proven ability to influence staff and steer others towards successful task accomplishment, manage priorities and meet deadlines;
  • Engage and excel in both autonomous and team environments
  • Demonstrated customer focus in the delivery of third level Research ICT support services. Including the ability to recognise client requirements, handle customer complaints and referring clients and/or work to other appropriate and relevant teams.
  • A good understanding of and demonstrated experience in the application of ITIL principles and practices.
  • Well-developed interpersonal, liaison and negotiation skills, including demonstrated ability to communicate accurately and effectively, both verbally and in writing with clients, management, staff and other organisations.
  • Demonstrate professional image - While there is no formal dress code, staff are required to dress and act in a professional manner, for example; neat casual clothing, no tracksuits, hats during all hours of duty on a Defence site.
  • Good understanding of ICT security principals, including industry standard and ASD ISM, with the ability to identify potential ICT security risks.
  • Demonstrable knowledge and experience in a number of the following technology areas
    • Platforms (Linux and/or Windows Desktop and Server) and supporting network services such as AD, DNS, DHCP
    • IP networking including routing, switching including associated device administration/management and good understanding of network design principals.
    • Network security services/appliances (ie. Firewalls) including associated device administration/management
    • Data movement protocols and tools such as SMB, NFS, rsync or storage system data synchronization.
    • Compute Server management and hosting facility best practice (ie, comms room, power, cooling)
    • Audio/Video systems (such as video switching matrixes)
    • Scripting/Programming (ie. PowerShell, python, JAVA) and/or experience supporting DevOps teams and systems.

SECURITY CLEARANCE REQUIREMENTS:

Please note due to the security requirements of the role candidates must be Australian Citizens and hold an active Australian Federal Government Security Clearance at the NV2 level.
