Job Description

Job Description
Functions as Morgue Attendant managing routine receipt and release of decedents and routine phone coverage; processes funeral home notifications/designations, basic autopsy requests, organ procurement protocols, and coroner's office referrals for each decedent, as applicable; assists with the transfer of decedents from cart/bed to cart/bed; completes documentation required for receipt/release protocols; performs data entry; guides transporters in proper receipt/release protocols; operates badge-only access points after-hours; communicates with security, clinical staff, non-OSU entities, residents, faculty, and autopsy staff regarding updates, documentation requirements, and other communications; composes accurate and concise hand-off correspondences including status updates and other pertinent information; discusses basic autopsy authorization processes and requirements with families and non-OSU representatives; obtains medical records from internal and external sources; collects patient information and reviews documents; operates clinical and pathology-specific information systems to prepare autopsy cases; accessions cases and prepares case folders including requesting/receiving, sorting and entering autopsy data into laboratory information systems amp; producing case document and labels; attends meetings; disposes of hazardous chemicals and biohazardous tissues and other specimens according to protocol; scans various tracked assets throughout workflows; assists in cleaning and staging the autopsy suite and adjacent areas after autopsy performance and conferences, according to routine schedules, and other times as necessary; assists with preparatory activities such as disposal box building, scrub management, slide scanning and filing, and conference setup ; provides periodic off-schedule coverage of the Morgue (volunteer-based and/or assigned; off-shift hours and holidays) including the receipt and release of decedents, phone calls, and the safe disposal of biohazardous and chemical waste including the associated documentation and barcode scanning; serves as a liaison with internal and external physicians, staff, researchers, families, funeral homes and representatives from other healthcare facilities.

Additional training as an autopsy technician (diener) may be considered college coursework in Anatomy required


Minimum Education Required
HS Graduate or Equivalent or equivalent combination of education and experience

Additional Education Desired

Associate's or Bachelor's degree in medical technology or biology desired


Required Qualifications
Experience with the principles, operations, and maintenance of laboratory procedures and equipment desired; Experience conducting professional and empathetic phone conversations strongly desired; Ability to move a minimum of 100 pounds and lift a minimum of 50 pounds required; computer skills including knowledge of basic internet operation and Microsoft Office strongly desired; strong customer service experience preferred; familiarity with medical terminology desired. Provides periodic off-schedule coverage of the Morgue (volunteer-based and/or assigned; off-shift hours and holidays) including the receipt/release of decedents; Requires successful completion of a background check; Selected candidate may be requested to complete a pre-employment physical including a drug screen.

Additional Information

This position will require working Friday-Monday. Premium pay is available for shifts covering weekends or at least four consecutive hours past 3pm on weekdays.

The targeted hiring range for this position is $15.10 to $16.00 per hour.
