Position Summary

The Preschool Director will provide leadership and direction in the continuing development and operation of an effective, fully licensed, cutting edge and Christ-centered preschool program. The Preschool Director is responsible for the day-to-day operations of the program area. Included are guest relations, personnel management, and oversight of the program areas and assets of the Preschool.

Essential Functions

Vocational engagement as a Director at The Salvation Army Kroc Center (henceforth, "the Kroc Center") is a position of sacred trust - representing, nurturing, protecting, and advancing the mission and purpose of The Salvation Army; and serving the needs of people in our community with dignity and respect. Conduct on and off the job must sustain a positive impact on The Salvation Army's religious goals, programs, and public image.

As such all Directors are expected to fulfill the following responsibilities within the scope of duties they perform:

  1. To know, explain and exemplify by the mission, purpose, and values of the Kroc Center.
  2. To understand all dimensions of Kroc Center mission and purpose toward the outcome of awareness, cohesiveness, and effective guest services.
  3. To create a safe and engaging environment for Kroc Center associates, guests, members, volunteers, partners, and vendors.
  4. To provide active support of, and participation in all Kroc Center campaigns and initiatives.
  5. To develop appropriate relationships and maintain appropriate relationship boundaries with other Kroc Center associates, guests, members, volunteers, partners, and vendors.
  6. To communicate in an appropriate, professional, responsive, and supportive manner.
  7. Effective interpersonal and electronic communication is essential for mission and purpose.
    • Interpersonal communication for day-to-day operational needs is preferred.
    • Direct, thoughtful communication for the resolution of questions or conflicts is expected.
    • Electronic communication - email, texts, etc. - is official communication; and supports and confirms interpersonal communication
    • Deference to and public support of group decisions and other Director's scope of expertise, position and responsibilities must be maintained.
  8. To maintain appropriate confidentiality, some agreements, ideas, processes, or other forms of sensitive information are revealed to certain individuals who are in positions of responsibility or are in possession of qualities or skills that make it necessary for them to know such confidential matters. Such information must be maintained in confidence.
  9. To complete annual, advanced managerial training to include, but not limited to: Protecting the Mission, Sexual Harassment, and others as determined.
  10. To positively guide and guard all Salvation Army resources: people, program, property, and finances toward the fulfillment of mission and purpose, and within the guidelines established by law, policy, and procedure.

Duties

  1. Plan, direct and guide the preschool programs and activities of the Kroc Center.
  2. Ensure optimum program quality is maintained at all times, including Christian education, principles, and practices as well as regular chapel meetings.
  3. Recruit, train and retain staff.
  4. Give direct supervision to preschool staff, including an Assistant Manager and Lead Teacher(s).
  5. Give indirect supervision to other preschool staff and volunteers.
  6. Define policies of admission, attendance, tuition, and educational goals. Enroll students and establish fees to be paid by families.
  7. Maintain accurate information in brochures, parent handbook and other materials distributed from the preschool office.
  8. Plan and implement a program for professional development of staff.
  9. Attend and participate in professional conferences, lectures, and other training events.
  10. Plan the yearly calendar of preschool events, holidays, and staff development days.
  11. Work in a cooperative manner with the other on-site directors.
  12. Attend all scheduled staff meetings and management team meetings. Conduct Preschool staff meetings.
  13. Work to coordinate activities with the other on-site directors when necessary.
  14. Serve as a community liaison between the Kroc Center and community groups, related specifically to preschool programs.
  15. Arrange tours and welcome visitors to the Preschool.
  16. Plan and implement a snack or meal program based on Title 22 requirements.
  17. Facilitate the USDA Food Program.
  18. Develop cooperative ventures that engage other community groups in the development of preschool programs.
  19. Oversee coordination and development of class schedules, curriculum, and fee schedules for preschool program.
  20. Ensure implementation of all policies, procedures, and practices, and that meet Salvation Army standards.
  21. Assist in providing staff support to related Advisory Council Committees, as assigned by the Corps Officer.
  22. Develop systems that safeguard any and all facilities, supplies and equipment related to the preschool programs.
  23. Create and maintain an office support system that will allow for timely and accurate record keeping, including the areas of statistical reports related to all preschool programs, accounting of expenditures and other reporting as required. Maintain California State Licensing agreements as well as clear channels of communication with the Community Care Licensing office.
  24. Develop job descriptions for preschool program staff; perform annual evaluations preschool program staff.
  25. Assist with the annual budget preparation, specifically related to the preschool prog rams. Give input as needed. Be available to give answers about expenditures and other fiscal related matters concerning preschool programs.
  26. Purchase and maintain supplies.
  27. Maintain clear channels of communication with staff, volunteers and program participates. This will include the writing of internal memos, schedules, flyers, newsletters, and one on one discussion.
  28. Maintain a safe working environment. Report all problems with facilities to the Facilities Engineer. Inventory major and minor equipment and budget for replacement.
  29. Give direction to event coordination with users of the preschool programs.
  30. Maintains good public relations for the preschool programs. Works closely with the PR & Marketing Director with the promotion of preschool programs.
  31. Ensure the attractive appearance and cleanliness of the preschool program areas.
  32. Perform other assignments/ duties as directed.

Working Conditions

Ability to walk, stand, bend, squat, climb, kneel, and twist on an intermittent or sometimes continuous basis. Ability to be able to lift up to 10lbs. Ability to grasp, push, pull objects such as files, file cabinets drawers and reach overhead. Ability to operate computer, fax, and telephone.

Minimum Qualifications

  1. By virtue of its direct contact with people who engage in Salvation Army programs, Christians with a demonstrated personal faith, agreement with the teaching of Scripture, and understanding of Salvation Army doctrine are preferred for this position.
  2. Have at least three years experience in developing, planning, managing, and supervising preschool programs.
  3. Have at least three years experience developing and administering budgets for preschool or related programs.
  4. Bachelor's Degree in Early Childhood Education or related field or equivalent required
  5. Compliance with current California Community Care Licensing requirements. Presently, education in Early Childhood with preferred courses in ' Early Childhood Education, including Child Development, Child, Family and Community; Early Childhood curriculum (1 2 units) and Early Childhood Administration (3 units) and four years teaching. (See current California licensing requirements for acceptable alternatives)
  6. Current Pediatric CPR & First Aid Cards.

Skills, Knowledge & Abilities

  1. Have successful experience in supervising and managing a professional staff and volunteers.
  2. Must be able to read, write and communicate in English.
  3. Bilingual/Bi-literate English/Spanish preferred.
  4. Must have ability to work with, direct, and relate well with co-workers, members, and guests
  5. Able to function in a fast-paced, frequently changing environment.
  6. Must possess good Guest Relations skills.
  7. Must be in good physical health and mental health, capable of meeting the demand of the RJKCCC job site.

Physical Requirements

  1. Strength and agility necessary to lift up to 50 pounds repeatedly.
  2. Must be able to bend, squat, sit for hours, and may require repeated walking/prolonged standing at all times.
  3. Meet all health and safety regulations as defined by the Health Department as well as The Salvation Army.
