Senior Counsel, Employment and Benefits Law

Location: Atlanta, GA; Dallas, TX

McKesson Corporation has an opening for Senior Counsel, Employment and Benefits Law. This role will be based in Atlanta, Georgia or Las Colinas, Texas, and report to the Assistant General Counsel, Employment and Benefits Law.

The position is primarily responsible for providing and managing legal services to the company on labor, employment and benefits law matters. In that role, he/she will be a key player in

facilitating proactive compliance with the following state and federal workplace laws:EEO, Wage/Hour, Equal Pay, Leave, Labor Relations, Restrictive Covenants, Immigration, OSHA, Government/OFCCP Audits and ERISA.

In the pursuit of this mission, the Senior Counsel, Employment and Benefits Law will have regular and significant interaction with other key functional areas, including human resources,

security, finance, IT, as well as with business units.

Responsibilities:

  • Provide advice and guidance to the company on employment, labor and benefits law issues while ensuring consistency with McKesson's strategic and business objectives. Work closely with human resources to align and support HR's efforts to create and maintain an engaged workforce
  • Collaborate with business unit leaders and business unit human resource professionals to ensure appreciation of employment law risks arising in their work groups and take preventative action to head off potential problems
  • Responsible for the management and oversight of outside counsel in the defense of employment litigation, in partnership with the Litigation attorneys
  • From time to time represent the company as advocate in administrative agency proceedings
  • Assist with enterprise-wide projects that reduce employment law risk for the organization
  • Carry out other duties as may be requested by the Assistant General Counsel, Employment and Benefits Law

Qualifications:

Minimum Requirements
  • 7+ years of progressively more responsible experience in U.S. employment and labor law. Deep and broad knowledge of U.S. employment and labor laws.Benefits experience is a plus.
  • Effective manager of outside counsel in litigation and advice work
  • A proven track record of successfully building and maintaining strong working relationships with human resources professionals.The individual's style must be highly collaborative and team oriented, while still being able to achieve desired objectives and effect change
  • Ability to weigh and balance legal risk with business needs and goals
  • Recognized as an effective negotiator
  • Respected as a professional who drives near-term results but maintains a clear view of the long term and the need for productive ongoing relationships with the workforce
  • Excellent communication skills - both oral and written

Critical Skills
  • Legal Experience: A subject matter expert who has demonstrated outstanding legal ability in the practice of employment law. A mix of law firm and in house experience is a plus.The successful candidate must have a proven track record of accomplishment as a lawyer with strong technical legal expertise and who, when required, can also roll up his or her sleeves and focus on the details of a matter as an individual contributor.Ability to think analytically and creatively and to problem solve, with a focus on current, innovative, and proactive approaches to employment and labor law.Anticipates future trends and consequences; has broad and deep legal knowledge and perspective.
  • Effective Interpersonal and Influencing Skills: In order to be successful, the lawyer in this role must be able to proactively implement employment strategies in a highly matrixed organization.

Education & Experience
  • Juris Doctorate (J.D.) from an accredited law school
  • Minimum of 7 years as a Licensed and Practicing Attorney.A mix of law firm and in house experience preferred.
