Qualifications

  • High school diploma.
  • Ability to work with and communicate with children and families of diverse cultural and socioeconomic groups.
  • Ability to make independent and effective decisions.
  • Experience supervising and working with children.
  • Be a team player as well as able to work independently.
  • Ability to accept supervision and guidance.
  • Ability to communicate and work with groups of varying age and skill levels, and provide necessary instruction to children and information to families.
  • Ability to observe and assess children's behavior enforce appropriate safety regulations and emergency procedures, and apply appropriate behavior-management techniques.
  • Valid Driver's License and must meet the MVR driver's qualifications.
  • Must pass The Salvation Army background checks.
  • Willingness to support the philosophy, goals, objectives, and mission of The Salvation ArmMust become certified in CPR and First Aid training.
  • It must be understood by the incumbent that the provisions of Safe From Harm will apply upon commencement of employment and also understood that the required Safe From Harm training be satisfactorily completed within the first week of employment.

Position Summary

The Day Camp Director is a leadership role among the Summer Day Camp Staff. This position is responsible to cover all duties associated with running the program.

This is a temporary, full-time position with an expectation of working forty (40) hours per week during the 12 weeks of Summer Day Camp programs. In addition, training and facility preparation will take place the weeks before and after the regular program weeks.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

This job description is not all inclusive. It is intended to identify the essential duties of the position. Other duties, responsibilities and tasks may be assigned by the Corps Officers.

  • Maintain positive work atmosphere by behaving and communicating in a manner that fosters good relationships with co-workers and supervisors. This would include but not be limited to such actions: resolution of conflicts in a professional manner; courteous treatment of staff, children and families; respect of others' property and person and professional and appropriate communication to and about co-workers, supervisors, and subordinates.
  • Support the mission of The Salvation Army by treating every child, family and colleague with individual respect and dignity, and without discrimination of any kind.
  • Engage all community members (including and not limited to, volunteers, participants, etc.) in a way that brings them to the Corps for programming, activities, and Pathway of Hope.
  • Greet and accommodate the needs of youth and families who participate in Community Center programs.
  • Ensure the safety of children in Community Center programs by maintaining a safe and positive environment.
  • Support Day Camp program by enforcing policies regarding payment, late fees, safety, and behavior expectations.
  • Responsible for planning, developing and implementing programing and activities that make up the daily schedule of activities, in conjunction with camp staff and volunteers.
  • Responsible for overseeing and scheduling Day Camp staff and volunteers.
  • Responsible for tracking and reporting daily statistics.
  • With Corps Officers provide opportunities for pastoral care and spiritual development with children and families, including VBS.
  • Use program time to engage children in meaningful conversation, activities and learning experiences.
  • Encourage respect for individuality and differences in each child.
  • Set a good example for children and others by implementing a culture of cleanliness, punctuality, sportsmanship, manners, encouragement and asking for help.
  • Understand the Day Camp Program and be able to run the program with limited supervision.
  • Coordinate movement between classes and activities and be aware of the location and activity of the Day Camp group as a whole.
  • Open and/or close the program and building as the day starts or ends including before and after care.
  • Mediate disputes and manage discipline between campers and/or staff as needed according to the behavior and discipline policy.
  • Be aware of and help to maintain daily and weekly schedule including meal and activity times, field trips, and drop offs/pick ups.
