About the Job

The Division of Molecular Medicine is a research-oriented division within the Department of Medicine. Faculty members utilize physiological and molecular approaches to better understand and improve the health of individuals and communities. A particular focus of the division is the use of genetically-engineered mouse models to investigate human metabolic diseases.

The laboratory of Curtis Hughey in the Division of Molecular Medicine, Department of Medicine aims to understand the metabolic factors underlying the development of metabolic dysfunction-associated fatty liver disease and comorbidities such as obesity and diabetes. The Hughey Lab is seeking a researcher who is enthusiastic to help in this research aim.

Specific duties include:

Mouse Husbandry and Colony Maintenance (30%)
* Manage multiple genetically-engineered mouse lines which includes setting up breeders, weaning mice, changing diets, monitoring health of the colony, and genotyping
* Assist with IACUC protocol generation, amendments, and compliance

Mouse Phenotyping (30%)
* Prepare for metabolic studies in mice which includes fasting mice, preparing reagents, and setting up equipment
* Perform metabolic studies which includes handling mice, blood sampling and pipetting, and venous infusions
* Record and organize experimental data
* Harvest tissues from mice and store samples appropriately

Coordination and completion of molecular physiology experiments (30%)
* Assist with the design, validation, and implementation of procedures for new and existing laboratory assays
* Perform biochemical and molecular analyses on mouse plasma and tissues including qPCR, western blotting, and enzymatic assays

General Laboratory Administration and Support (10%)
* Purchase appropriate laboratory supplies and equipment
* Complete routine laboratory tasks including hazardous/chemical waste removal, washing of plastic and glassware, and equipment maintenance
* Assist in completing and maintaining regulatory documents
* Assist the PI in training new and existing lab members in lab procedures and protocols

Qualifications

All required qualifications must be included in the application materials

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

* BS in science or a combination of education and work experience equal to four years
* Lab experience and/or classroom education in mammalian physiology and metabolism

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
* Demonstrated experience in basic science laboratory and/or with metabolic research
