About the Job

Title: Summer Day Camp Instructor

Appointment: 67-day Temporary Employee (May thru August)

Supervisor: Youth Education School and Family Program Manager

Pay: $19.00, dependent on experience and internal equity.

RESPONSIBILITIES:
* Deliver high-quality programs that connect children to plants and the natural world
* Communicate positively and appropriately with parents/teachers/adults/volunteers
* Prepare, set up and manage program supplies stocking items for the next instructor
* Maintain a safe and fun learning environment for students
* Delegate tasks and provide guidance for volunteers
* Provide feedback information for program improvement
* Assigned work may be a mix of lead teaching responsibilities and assisting other staff in program delivery

Qualifications

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
* Bachelor's degree in education, horticulture, natural sciences or related field
* Experience teaching in a classroom or informal setting
* Ability to teach with energy, clarity, and flexibility
* Enthusiasm for working with kids using patience and a sense of humor
* Strong organizational and communication skills
* Ability to walk, bend, and lift 20 pounds, working indoors and outdoors
* Must successfully pass a background check
* Good driving record

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
* Knowledge and excitement around popular camp themes: Minecraft, Harry Potter, cooking, art, spies, mad science etc.
* Knowledge of, and willingness to play games, use puppets, dress in costume and get messy

WORK SCHEDULE:
Commitment: On call /as needed
Hours: negotiable 0-40 hours/week (will vary from week to week)

About the Department

The Minnesota Landscape Arboretum is a community outreach unit of the University of Minnesota's College of Food, Agriculture and Natural Resource Sciences. The Arboretum is located west of Minneapolis/St Paul and its 1,200 acres traverse the municipalities of Chaska, Chanhassen and Victoria. As a member of the American Public Garden Association and an accredited museum through the American Alliance of Museums, the Arboretum is a tremendous public asset.
