The Optum Technology Digital Leadership team is transforming Optum to be an industry-leading Consumer brand, delivering personalized digital solutions that empower direct to consumer digital first experiences that educate, guide and empower consumers to the right care across all lines of business for Optum.

In this newly created leadership role, you will help make UnitedHealth Group's consumer obsessed digital vision come to life and lead the organization through a complete transformation of digital experiences serving health plan members, employers and providers. This leader will deliver on the end-to-end digital Engineering strategy, lead an integrated team focused on driving continuous, metrics-backed improvements to all facets of the digital experience (with a focus on consumer experience), product and engineering disciplines.

The SVP, Digital Engineering - Optum Consumer will report to the Chief Digital Officer for UnitedHealth Group (who has full accountability for both Optum & UnitedHealthcare businesses) and have end-to-end accountability for leading the digital capabilities and engineering for consumer digital experiences for all of Optum. This role will partner across all of Optum and external partners to oversee (and be accountable for) end-to-end digital experiences.

Candidates for this role will need to be seasoned executive engineering leaders with deep expertise in digital product growth, have proven experience designing new business cases, deep understanding of direct-to-consumer digital products and ecosystems, and how to optimize cost and reuse for multiple brands.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Lead a high-performing, multi-disciplinary global engineering team of 700+ engineers across web, mobile and portal solutions
  • Define the digital technology strategy for end-to-end omni-channel digital experiences
  • Formulate and lead both near-term and long-term digital product development strategies and ongoing deliveries
  • Create high performing product model across all disciplines and partner with internal and external business stakeholders to enable seamless omni-channel experiences for those we serve
  • Drive meaningful integration of online and mobile experiences through personalization, product and service orientation that influence the flow of healthcare
  • Create a data driven culture using real-time site telemetry and consumer insights to continuously improve the performance and reliability of the sites
  • Reimage experiences through technology by leveraging mobile first principles enabled through highly personalized Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning methods at sub second response times
  • Drive thought leadership and stay current on technology trends

Required Qualifications:

  • 15 + years of progressive product engineering leadership experiences
  • 10 + years of leading direct to consumer digital engineering teams delivering direct to consumer solutions (Digital, eCommerce and mobile)
  • History of driving multiple digital transformations and successfully enabling businesses to adopt a product model culture
  • Demonstrated success leading through (and developing) other leaders
  • Track record of effectively leading global engineering organizations of 500+ team members (both employees & strategic vendor partners)
  • Background in creating new businesses, new go to market digital channels and creation of business cases that influenced consumer digital strategy with senior leadership
  • Success leading a digital transformation for a leading consumer brand
  • Experience using modern software engineering technologies and practices including, but not limited to: public cloud (AWS, Azure & GCP); micro-services; CI/CD; DevSecOps
  • Track record of success leading large-scale global digital organizations using design thinking principles that resulted in amazing consumer experiences
  • Demonstrated history of applying product and engineering practices to drive business value

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience building digital solutions in the Retail industry

California, Colorado, Connecticut, Hawaii, Nevada, New York, Rhode Island, or Washington Residents Only: The salary range for California, Colorado, Connecticut, Hawaii, Nevada, New York, Rhode Island, or Washington residents is $300,000 to $400,000 per year. Pay is based on several factors including but not limited to education, work experience, certifications, etc. In addition to your salary, UnitedHealth Group offers benefits such as, a comprehensive benefits package, incentive and recognition programs, equity stock purchase and 401k contribution (all benefits are subject to eligibility requirements).
