About the Job

Position Overview

TRIO Upward Bound (UB) provides a six-week required program for up to 80 students of which five weeks include supplemental academic programming. Each academic class is 80 minutes long (in person) and is Monday through Friday between the hours of 9:00 AM - 3:45 PM. Each UB student takes an English, Math, and two elective courses based on their grade level. Math and English classes are taught in the morning and the elective courses are taught in the afternoons. Applicants must specify in their cover letter which classes they are interested in instructing. A maximum of two classes can be taught during the summer program for each staff. Applicants must be able to commit to the entire seven weeks of employment (see below for schedule specifics).

Instructors are responsible for revising and/or creating curriculum in English, Math, College Exploration, Computer Literacy, Economics, Forensic Science, Government and Advocacy, a foreign language, as well as a supplemental Bridge course. In addition, instructors will track and document class/program and student data. Teachers will instruct in a classroom on campus, Monday-Friday, mornings or afternoons during a five-week high school summer academic supplemental program.

This position is based on campus. Per UMN policy, work may be done remotely when appropriate and approved by your manager.

Job Responsibilities

Coordination 100%

  • Revise and/or create curriculum in high school level curriculum in subjects listed above
  • Prepare daily lesson plans and teach daily in a classroom at the University of Minnesota each week during summer program dates
  • Monitor attendance, document student performance and complete student evaluations as required by TRIO Upward Bound
  • Assess student learning and inform professional staff of student academic concerns and areas for improvement
  • Support program mission and objectives by attending additional program events
  • Supervise one undergraduate classroom assistant
  • Attend all staff trainings
  • Attend and engage in weekly staff meetings
  • Other duties as assigned

Qualifications

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelors degree
  • Experience working with diverse, multicultural/multilingual and/or urban high school students (can be outside a classroom setting
  • Strong understanding of content area of interest
  • Direct classroom instruction and management experience
  • Must pass criminal background check
  • Must be available from Friday, June 14 - Friday, August 2, 2024


Preferred Qualifications

  • Classroom teaching experience in designated subject (minimum two years)
  • Experience working w/ English Language Learners (ELL)
  • Teaching Licensure
  • Experience working with low-income, and/or first generation students
  • Experience developing and evaluating curriculum
  • Strong classroom management skills
  • Experience evaluating student learning and content retention
  • Experience in supervision
  • Strong communication skills (written and oral)
  • Candidates who have overcome and/or lived experiences similar to backgrounds of TRIO Upward Bound student population including
    low-income, first generation, will receive priority consideration.
About the Department

Department Overview
TRIO Upward Bound (TRIO UB) is a federally funded, U.S. Department of Education (USDE) equal educational opportunity program. TRIO UB is a college preparatory program for high school students who come from low-income and are working to be the first person in their family who attends college. TRIO UB works with students, parents, schools and communities, on a long-term and intensive basis to help generate both individual and systemic change. Services are designed to help participants build the skills needed to succeed in post secondary education. TRIO Upward Bound annually serves 118 Minneapolis Public High School students; this federal grant project has received continuous funding since 1966.

  • To provide educational opportunities not usually available to low-income youth from diverse, urban backgrounds representing varied cultural and
    ethnic backgrounds,
