About the Job

This position will allow the researcher the unique opportunity to learn and work within a highly interactive and interdisciplinary laboratory of the director of the Division of Molecular Medicine. This laboratory uses cutting-edge approaches such as mass spectrometry to reveal and mechanistically dissect metabolic underpinnings of adult disease pathogenesis in novel paradigms.


The technician will apply a large number of concepts, fundamentals,
and techniques, and will hone his/her interactive skills via the project's collaborations.
The technician must be able to:
1. Acquire pristine biospecimens from mice, archiving these materials in a meticulous manner. (5%)
2. Correctly prepare biological samples for various molecular biology and mass
spectrometry based assays (5%)
3. Perform basic molecular biology colorimetric assays to measure the concentrations of proteins, fat, cholesterol and other metabolites of interest (20%)
4. The technician will need to be able to successfully perform basic molecular biology assays such as Western Blots, or qPCR (20%)
5. The technician must be capable of performing tissue or cell extracts (10%)
6. In mentored environment, technician will assist with liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry-based assays, prepare samples, equipment, acquire data and at least perform preliminary analysis. (20%)
7. Prepare primary tissue cell cultures, reagents, media, plates etc (5%)
8. Comply with established safety procedures and maintain required documentation on laboratory and specimen conditions. (5%)
9. Ensure lab conditions and equipment are properly cleaned and maintained in
accordance with established procedures.(5%)
10. Assist with lab compliance, maintenance, and cleaning. Including maintenance of mass spectrometry based tools such as bottles or capillaries (5%)

Required Qualifications:
BA/BS in biological science, chemistry, biochemistry or related field or a combination of related education and work experience to equal four years.

Candidates must show strong motivation, scientific curiosity, diligence, problem solving skills, and great organizational skills. Successful candidate should be self-motivated, and have ability to work in team as well as independently. This is an ideal position for a recent graduate who wants to gain an intense research experience before pursuing graduate school.

Interest in and experience with mouse handling and at least elementary understanding of molecular biology assays, including PCR, Western Blots, and interest in learning to use mass spectrometry based approaches in mentored environment, are essential. The environment is collegial and will depend heavily on the researcher's communication skills with the laboratory members. The researcher will need demonstrated ability to work independently and also to fluently communicate with laboratory staff and investigators; has the ability to maintain complete and organized records/reports; and has a working knowledge of computer software, the internet (web- based resources such as PubMed and other resources through the NCBI), and general lab equipment. Prior leadership and teaching experience are desired.

Preferred Qualifications:
Prior experience in a biomedical or mass spectrometry research lab at one, or more, large medical schools, performing studies obesity-related intermediary metabolism is strongly desired.
Those who have presented their work in poster and/or oral form at academic symposia will be particularly competitive.
Prior leadership and teaching experience are desired.
