Job Description
POSITION SUMMARY:

The Mechanical Engineer will be responsible for understanding existing Michael Foods’ processing systems and will provide recommendations on process and equipment changes. This position will also develop, direct and acquire innovative technology to deliver competitive advantage through new processes or products, quality/shelf life improvements, yield improvements, and/or other cost reductions.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES:
 
  1. Utilize process engineering knowledge to identify and document process capabilities and opportunities.
  2. Develop and recommend processing methodologies to enhance efficiency and product consistency.
  3. Analyze processing issues - determine causes and solutions through research and consultation.
  4. Review new product development projects in order to provide guidance early in the development that will result in a better product / process design. Develop future process requirements and facilitate discussion of these new opportunities.
  5. Specify potential processing methods and equipment needed to process new products.
  6. Participate in bench and pilot plant testing with product development team and pilot plant team.
  7. Participate in review of test results and recommend manufacturing procedures in collaboration with appropriate quality assurance, manufacturing and engineering groups.
  8. Lead new equipment testing protocol, process design, and testing for new products/processes. Manage the processing aspect of new product development projects from concept through commercialization.
  9. Maintain knowledge of current product and development activities.
  10. Understand new processing innovation trends, recognized opportunities for Michael Foods, and present these innovations to various functional groups within Michael Foods.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
 
  1. BS in Engineering with 5-7 years of experience performing similar work in the food industry or an equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job.
  2. Proficient with office computer software as well as AutoCAD for design layout communication.
  3. Knowledge and experience with thermal processing of liquids is required. Aseptic experience is desirable.
  4. Strong project planning and management skills.
  5. Good written and verbal communication skills. Excellent interpersonal abilities.
  6. Ability to think independently and quickly to resolve issues.
  7. Ability to travel, both domestic and international. Travel is likely to range from 20 – 50%.
