The White Bear Lake Area Schools serve all or parts of Birchwood, Gem Lake, Hugo, Lino Lakes, Little Canada, Maplewood, North Oaks, Vadnais Heights, White Bear Lake and White Bear Township, with eight elementary schools (K-5), two middle schools (6-8), a two-campus high school (9-12), an Area Learning Center, three locations of early childhood programs (birth-5) and a senior program. The school district, with a total population of approximately 50,000 residents, services approximately 8,100 students K-12. Elementaries focus on basic-skills through innovative instruction, including a renowned mathematics curriculum. Traditional classroom settings are available at the Distric''s neighborhood schools, and Matoska International is an International Baccalaureate World School site. A gifted program is offered for District students demonstrating exceptional ability in communications and mathematics. School-aged childcare is available before and after school.

Middle schools take traditional studies into challenging new areas through inter-disciplinary teaching teams, providing a smooth transition from the elementary to high school classroom. The middle school curriculum is a rigorous curriculum with high standards designed to meet the unique needs of each individual student. Three years of world language (Spanish, French and German) are available. Enriched classes are offered.

The high school operates on a six period day schedule, offering numerous opportunities to prepare students for post-secondary plans. The District offers rigorous College in the Schools and Advanced Placement courses, offering students introductory-level college coursework. The district offers more than 100 extra-curricular activities for students, providing students opportunities to excel outside the classroom. The district's exceptional youth development program has gained both state and national attention for its focus on student leadership and community service.

A comprehensive special education department, including a recognized autism program, supplements learning whenever needed. The District also participates in a special education cooperative district, which services students with special needs. The District works in partnership with a variety of community organizations to enhance students' learning opportunities. Students receive art lessons, water safety lessons, enhanced music programs, and experiential learning through collaborations with area partners. Involvement with the East Metro Integration District (EMID) offers inter-district partnerships, a multicultural resource center, and networks and advisory groups. The District is fortunate to have thousands of hours of volunteer help.
