Company Overview
The Lynde family first started producing plants in Golden Valley before 1900. Charles Horace Lynde (born 1870) chose a location to farm at the corner of Xerxes Ave. N and Glenwood Ave. Charles married his wife Margaret in 1894 and had one son, Henry Spencer Lynde, born in 1895 just one year after they were married. Together they began growing veggies and found a market for fresh cut leaf lettuce at the Minneapolis Farmer's Market and the Winnipeg Market via the Great Northern Depot.
When H. Spencer (as he preferred) returned from serving in the Navy during WWI, the economy changed and the Lynde family found a market for fresh cut flowers and spring bulbs. Sweet peas, Chrysanthemums, and Tulips took the place of lettuce and tomatoes. After taking over the business after his father's death in 1953, H. Spencer married Francis Keef (d 1955) in 1921 and had two children, Charles Spencer and Alice May. Francis died in 1955 and H. Spencer remarried in 1956 to Mildred Wright (d 1968).
H. Spencer's son Charles (d 2008) then took over the family business in 1970. He had married his wife Roberta in 1945 and had two children, Edward Spencer and Susan Lee. The city of Minneapolis Park Board wanted the three acre parcel of land along Glenwood Ave. and bought out Charles and his second wife Violet. With the money from the land sale, they purchased 20 acres of land and built a new production facility in the fall of 1971 at the current location here in Maple Grove.
In 1976 Charles' son Ed married Sandy Johnson and in 1978 began taking over the family business. Ed and Sandy had two children, Derek Edward and Andrea Diane (d 1999). In 1982 Lynde Greenhouse started actively selling its production at the retail level. The current garden center and office building was added in 1988. Today, our garden center generates over 60% of our business and gives us a good idea of what today's consumers are looking to buy.
The business has been owned and operated by four generations and currently Derek Lynde, the fifth generation of the Lynde family, is working for the company.
