Company Overview

Who We Are
PDL BioPharma is a leader in the discovery, development and marketing of innovative therapies for serious or life-threatening illnesses, commercially focused on the acute care, hospital setting. Our therapeutic emphasis is on the areas of hepatorenal syndrome, inflammation and autoimmune diseases, cardiovascular disorders and cancer .

Where We Came From
Our roots are steeped in breakthrough antibody humanization technology — which enabled the development of some of the most innovative therapeutic advances of the past decade — including Synagis® for respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), Herceptin® for metastatic breast cancer, Avastin™ for metastatic colorectal cancer, Mylotarg® for acute myelogenous leukemia, and Xolair® for persistent asthma. In the nearly 20 years that we’ve been in business, we’ve established a strong financial foundation based on royalty revenues from licensing our technology to a variety of biotechnology and pharmaceutical partners.

In recent years, we’ve shifted from a royalty-driven enterprise into a commercial biopharmaceutical company. Through acquisitions and strategic partnerships, we’ve gained a commercial sales force and several marketed products. We’ve also expanded our development pipeline and focused our research capabilities, resulting in a strong pipeline of six innovative therapies in Phase 2 or Phase 3 development and a strategy to continue fueling that pipeline through both internal discovery and collaboration. Through these efforts, we’ve transformed our business and now we’re focused on becoming a sustainably profitable business enterprise.

Where We Are Now
Today, PDL BioPharma is leveraging its commercial presence in the acute care market, a rich pipeline, and expertise in antibody humanization to become a leading multinational biopharmaceutical company.

In the United States and Canada, PDL BioPharma markets several commercial biopharmaceutical products for the hospital setting — Cardene I.V.® for the short-term treatment of hypertension, Retavase® for acute myocardial infarction and IV Busulfex® for conditioning prior to a bone marrow transplant in association with chronic myelogenous leukemia. IV Busulfex is also available worldwide through our distribution partners, a listing of which is available upon request.

Terlipressin is in Phase 3 development by our partner, Orphan Therapeutics LLC , for the treatment of Type 1 hepatorenal syndrome, a serious complication of end-stage liver disease. PDL BioPharma holds all marketing and distribution rights to terlipressin in the United States and Canada. Our other leading clinical programs include Nuvion® (visilizumab), in development for intravenous steroid-resistant ulcerative colitis and Crohn's disease and ularitide in development for acute decompensated heart failure.

Three of our other pipeline products are being developed through partnership agreements. Daclizumab for asthma and for maintenance therapy to prevent organ rejection in patients requiring renal transplants is being developed in partnership with Roche. Daclizumab for multiple sclerosis and non-respiratory diseases, M200 (volociximab) for cancer and HuZAF™ (fontolizumab) for rheumatoid arthritis are being developed in partnership with Biogen Idec.

Our Goals
As a newly commercial business, it’s part of our stated aims to become a premier biopharmaceutical company that develops and markets novel therapies that save lives. We are committed to growing our business by continuing to support our commercial products and becoming a profitable enterprise, while we research and develop innovative therapies that help patients and physicians worldwide.
