Company Overview

We provide a lifetime of services to help those who serve through the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA) lead healthy lives and achieve financial security. As an ELCA churchwide unit, we provide retirement, health and related benefits and services for 50,000 pastors, rostered laypersons and lay employees and their families, and nearly 11,000 congregations and other ELCA sponsoring organizations. The Board of Pensions is based in Minneapolis.

A board of 19 trustees governs our administration of an approximate $5.5 billion portfolio. Our president, John G. Kapanke, guides our mission, vision and values with the help of nearly 200 employees who devote their professional skills and expertise to provide a benefits program that is faithful to the well-being of those who serve through the ELCA.

People and culture
At the Board of Pensions, we share a continual commitment to improving the quality of our service. We also realize that quality of service goes hand-in-hand with quality of life. We value the diverse contributions and styles each employee adds to our organization by:

  • recognizing and encouraging leadership, innovation and responsibility;

  • supporting employees in maintaining a balance between work and other interests.

Encompassing our mission, vision and values, we support each other in our challenges and celebrate our successes.

    Employee quotes
We asked employees what they like most about working at the Board of Pensions. Here's what they said:

"What I like about working at the Board is helping members with problems on a personal basis. Over the years, you get to know the members by name and by what problem you may have helped them with in the past. They will call and ask for you by name and I don't hesitate to contact them. I don't think that you would get the same feeling of helping a member on a one-on-one basis with a commercial company."
    — Steve Stoffel, Service Center department, employee since July 23, 1990

"What I like most about working at the Board is its values and the fact that it is concerned about customer relationships. I feel it does its best to provide the best service it can and is open to suggestions for improvement. Especially in this time now when good service seems to be hard to come by, I think the Board does a good job of satisfying its customers."
    — Shirley Seid, Finance and Accounting department, employee since Aug. 15, 1981

    Diversity
The Board of Pensions understands that diversity is an essential component to fostering an environment that supports our values of integrity, excellence, respect, stewardship and collaboration, and is critical to our ability to achieve our mission.

We believe in offering a workplace designed to enhance employees' understanding of their responsibilities and benefits as part of an organization that is committed to valuing diversity.

A diverse workforce enables us to build, strengthen and renew relationships between internal and external customers, management and staff, and individuals throughout the organization.

    Community
In addition to strengthening the mission and enhancing the lives of those who serve the church, Board of Pensions' employees work together to strengthen and enhance our community.

Our 2004 Community Giving Campaign, a combined fundraising effort on behalf of the Greater Twin Cities United Way and the Community Solutions Fund, raised more than $61,000 through various sales, competitions and team-building activities.

Giving doesn't need to be monetary in nature. Volunteer opportunities throughout the year with local organizations also bring our employees together outside the office to give of their time and talents.
