The University of Minnesota is known internationally for pain research and the development of novel analgesic medications. The multi-disciplinary U of M Pain Consortium spans diverse Academic units including Anesthesiology, Dentistry, Education, Epidemiology, Medicinal Chemistry, Medicine, Neurology, Neuroscience, Neurosurgery, Pharmaceutics, Pharmacology, Pharmacy, Psychiatry, Psychology, Rehabilitation Medicine and Veterinary Science. Our investigators employ a wide variety of techniques including molecular biology, electrophysiology, immunohistochemistry, animal behavior, human psychophysics, and neuroimaging. Research is directed toward a broad-spectrum or questions related to pain transmission, neuroplasticity, hyperalgesia, endogenous pain inhibitory systems, and development of analgesic medications. The pain community is well connected with the University's Medical Discovery Team on Addiction. This mixture provides a highly enriched environment and fosters strong collaborations and interdisciplinary training opportunities.
